Five Extremely Profitable Business Lessons Courtesy Of Colonel Harland Sanders!

Entrepreneur without the use of Google, does the date September 9,1890 have any significant meaning  to you?

Not to worry, it’s not the date that led to the signing of some famous treaty or signing of a particular document etc!  Nope!

It’s the day the late great Colonel Harland Sanders, yes the very same one of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame was born! In a quiet little town called Henryville, Indiana.

In fact, to date he’s probably (at least) one of, if not the most famous citizens in the towns history!

That being said, “what” possible extremely powerful five business/life lessons, could a man from such humble beginnings, possibly teach you about running a successful business? Stay tuned….

 Five Powerful Business Lessons Courtesy Of  The Late Great Colonel Harland Sanders!

First of all, as some of you may already know, long before the world renowned – and respected- business legend  “Colonel” Harland Sanders was  business folklore! And long before he actually had a trivia question on Goggle, asking “Was colonel sanders really a colonel?”

And of course the correct (real) answer is no he was not! Rumor has it that an acting Governor dubbed him a “Kentucky colonel” and the legend was born. However, long before that part of his life would take shape, Harland Sanders owned a small rather quaint- yet extremely popular- gas station/restaurant conveniently located off a major interstate.

Where motorists and truckers frequently stopped in to feast on his now “legendary” fried chicken! Whatever the colonel and company were doing to it! They were causing quite a buzz for sure!

And well past the age of forty, the good colonel got the itch to become an even more successful entrepreneur.

(This by the way, was after his wife had left him, plus taken the kids! And he’d lost his beloved gas station/ restaurant too!)

Yes There Will Definitely Be Times When Things Just Don’t Look So Rosy!

Officially considered a senior citizen, and of no more practical use to society.  Even facing those incredible odds, he still decided to take  his “secret recipe” nationwide, by selling franchises. But there were a few obstacles to overcome first.

Back then, (during the fifties), nobody had ever heard of, nor seen a nationally successful fast food franchise that centered around ‘fried chicken” being it’s primary attraction.

The following five extremely powerful and inspirational business lessons, detail the colonel’s incredible journey of changing both the mind and hearts of the fast food franchise world and the world at large.

 1.) Powerful business lesson # one: The “colonel” endured tons of personal rejection and ridicule longer before ever sold his first franchise! The nay Sayers told him (everything) from he was too old, to his fast food fried chicken franchise idea” was nothing more than a pipe dream! And yet he pressed on! What’s the lesson?

Entrepreneur, being successful in any type of his business takes tons of commitment, endurance, hard work and perseverance! You gotta keep on keeping on!(In spite of your detractors and haters.)

2.)  Powerful business lesson # two: The good colonel saw “what” successful franchising had done for another older gentlemen, named Ray Kroc, that the world had also told him his revolutionary business ideas would never work.

And the colonel copied a proven business model, that being “franchising’, to be build his own empire.

What’s the lesson? Don’t try & re-invent wheel! Instead learn and follow a proven business model and leverage it’s advantages to the hilt.

Just Because You’re A Great Cook Doesn’t Mean You Can Run A Successful Restaurant!

3.)  Powerful business lesson # three: All along your (entrepreneurial) journey, constantly work on first developing and refining your “USA/USP ‘unique selling advantage (and or) unique selling proposition.

Whenever asked, “what?” made his chicken taste so good/different from everybody else s?  The colonel always responded that it was his “secret” eleven herb and spices!(You go colonel.)

What’s the lesson? The colonel had  not re-invented  cooking fried chicken itself! Instead, he simply embellished what was already being done, by putting his own unique spin on it. And thus honed his very own “USA” unique selling advantage.

4.)  Powerful business lesson # four: Who doesn’t recognize his now famous (not to mention) legendary ‘white suit, cane and way back when, his classic Cadillac automobile! The colonel used to criss cross the country, waving to anyone that would pay attention to him at the time!

In other words, the colonel went about systematically and methodically cultivating, his now legendary (and easily recognizable) worldwide brand.

5.)  Powerful business lesson # five: And finally… Let us not forget, that it was (indeed) another young (innovative) up and coming (soon to be) fast food franchise  legend in his own right. That help propel the colonel’s Kentucky Fried Chicken” franchise to mega success.

The late great Dave Thomas, the eventual founder of Wendy’s, worked as a young entrepreneurial apprentice under the colonel’s watchful eye.

And years later, after Dave Thomas had already retired, as a successful self made millionaire many times over! He came out of retirement to make second fortune by founding Wendy’s.

 You Definitely Don’t Need A Perfect Plan! But You’ll Never Ever Come Close To Perfection Without A Plan!

What’s the lesson? Entrepreneur no matter “what” stage or level your business is in. Always hire or associate with the best talent you can afford at the time! And (like) the colonel, it helps if you develop the talent for spotting talent.

Keep these five extremely powerful business/life lessons in  mind, as you go about your entrepreneurial journey. And “who” knows, maybe you just might become the stuff  business legends are made of as well. Just like the late great colonel Harland Sanders! Don’t you agree?
