What The Mysterious Nigerian Businessman Can Teach You About Building Trust!

 

So has this or maybe a better question to ask is; how many times has this particular situation happened to you? You ever get one of these spam emails from someone claiming to be from overseas, typically mine read something to the affects of “Urgent!”: Please read and respond immediately!”

(This type of message from a complete stranger is supposedly their way of building trust?)

And not to stereotype and or offend anyone! But typically my sender claims to be a Nigerian businessman, just looking to help out a complete stranger! Translated: They’d like to help me recover some unclaimed money I somehow have deposited in a bank in Nigeria of all places! Who knew.

And this huge sum of unclaimed money is (typically) in the millions! And in order to access it, all I need do is to send this ever so mysterious business person, (wouldn’t you know it!) Of all things, a few dollars for some type of International banking transaction (release fee) of some kind and bingo!

The money is mine! Oh how convenient! Of course right about now your gut kneed reaction, as was mine initially, tells you this is without a doubt a complete scam! And you are correct da- moon- doe!

But here’s the thing and why I’m sharing this particular post. Does any of this situation do anything for you in terms of effectively building trust? I didn’t think so! Yet, think about how you often go about building trust (or trying to) online!

You may not realize it, but in a lot of ways, you’re going at things the very same way! Although, it may not initially seem as obvious…

 So What Can This So Called Mysterious Nigerian Businessman Teach You About Building Trust?

First of all, without sounding too entirely jaded and cynical here! The only thing that’s probably true about the individual(s) that somehow always consistently send me this type of periodic emails is; they may in fact be from Africa!

But the rest of their story is total fabrication. The publisher’s strongly suggested I use that term instead of a more adult term I was originally thinking of! But so what! You already knew that! Right?

So how do you and I and this whole online marketing thing come into play here? After all, you/we’re both running legitimate businesses and are offering quality products and services correct? Yea, but….

For instance. Why do you continually refuse to add your real picture to your gravatar?  Instead you insist on using that long term profit repelling defaulted icon image! Bad marketer!

And whether you’re just getting started online or not! You take your sweet time responding, (if at all!) to your potential customers or clients questions and or inquiries. My friend, that is not the proven or preferred method to go about building trust.

And further more, it really doesn’t matter if I was sitting down face to face with my so called mysterious Nigerian businessman, (if it’s even a man to begin with!) After all, I can’t physically see them to verify can I?

The Basic Elements Of A Scam Have Absolutely Nothing To With Sending Emails!

But even if we were sitting across a table from each other, it would still be painfully obvious that they’re not  legit! Right! Exactly. So the fact that they’ve sent me this completely bogus email is secondary.

So the real lesson that hopefully got conveyed here is, stop hiding from your potential customers and clients! Come out of the shadows! Meaning: if you need to actually pick up the phone or return an email.

Or text or offer additional free help, in order to help your potential prospect, customer or client, benefit from their interaction with you.Then ladies & gentlemen, that’s what you need to do.

The main point being, some unknown (unseen complete stranger), that’s hiding behind an email (of all things!) while simultaneously asking for money right out of the gate!

That’s not exactly the correct long term blueprint for building trust, now is it? If your target market doesn’t feel confident that they can reach you and or that you’re truly sincere about helping them solve their problems and or issues etc.

You’re not building trust. So the real lesson that this so called mysterious Nigerian businessman taught me is. If you’re going to ask a complete stranger to send you money, you’d better make sure you’ve gained their trust first!

So come out into the open already!
