So What Leadership Qualities Can Be Discovered From An Episode From The Original Star Trek Series?

So entrepreneur, are you (like me) a big fan of either the new or original Star Trek series? (Yes,) I confess, I’m a bit of an old school- er when it comes to my fond memories of the original and (at the time) ground breaking television series.

Spock played by (Leonard Nimoy) and MCCoy (aka) Bones!  the late (Deforest Kelley) and of course, the one and only Captain  James T.  Kirk, played by William Shattner. BTW, does anybody happen to know or remember, what the letter T stood for in  his name?

Just curious? Anyway, as a kid, I loved watching the star ship enterprise go about it’s merry way and to watch how, no matter what cyber issues  the crew encountered, they always seemed to triumph in the end.

Which brings me to the point of this particular post. Some of those episodes offered some text book examples of true leadership qualities in the making. And it’s one such episode in particular, that I offer as proof positive of such a claim.

So let me (now) briefly set the table for you……

So What Type Of So Called Leadership Qualities Can You Really Discover From An Original Episode Of Star Trek!

So here’s the short of it. On this particular episode, seems the good Captain (that would be Bill Shattner’s character), had this rather attractive and fairly impressionable  young assistant, that of course had developed a rather noticeable crush on our dashingly handsome space crusader. Certainly no harm there, right?

Well, this particular episode was dealing with the fact that inside each of us, (to varying degrees) mind you, resides good and evil. So as it turns out, the good Captain, actually had (unbeknownst) to anyone at the time, these same two distinct sides buried inside him as well! (Say what?)

And to prove it, there were actually two separate Captain Kirks, simultaneously aboard the ship, at (wouldn’t you know it!) , the exact same time! Thus, begins the fabulous tale of the good Kirk (the one we true Trekkie’s had come to know and love!) And of course the evil/bad Kirk, that we were all about to discover!

And the evil Kirk as it turned out, lured this young and slightly naive assistant to his quarters and tried to sexually assault her! And as she resisted and fought back, she scratched the evil Captain and left a rather noticeable scratch mark on his face!

And not wanting to be discovered and captured so easily, the evil Kirk (immediately) went and found the real unsuspecting James T. and jumped him by surprised and scratched him, and also leaving him with  a similar mark on his face, in order to cause further confusion, as to which one was in fact the impostor!

Real Leaders Don’t Claim Who They Are They Demonstrate Who They Are!

Meanwhile, this distraught young assistant (still partially in shock!), finally confided to both Mr. Spock and McCoy, what had taken place a little earlier! And this of course, set up the terribly commercial filled final fifteen minutes or so of this particular episode!

As Spock, MCcoy and the young assistant, made their way to the bridge,  along with whom they thought was the real Captain Kirk! In order to finally settle the dust and get this entire unfortunate situation resolved!

Meanwhile, the fake Kirk along with the fresh scratches still on his face, had also made his way to the bridge ahead of them of course, in order to assume command of the ship.

And of course, try and pretend, that he was in fact the real Captain Kirk. And thus, the stage was now truly set, for the final showdown! (And after the much anticipated  station break!) you hurried up and concluded whatever business you had and glued yourself back to the TV!

Do You Know Who The Twin To A Wise Man Is?

And here’s the way it ultimately panned out. As soon as the elevator doors to bridge opened (or whatever they called them!), the fake Kirk, who was by now comfortably nestled into the Captain’s chair! He disclaimed, “quick Spock, grab him! Can’t you see, he’s fooled you!”

To which point both chief engineer Mr. Scott and Spock, looked pointedly at both men! And finally Mr. Scott turned to Mr. Spock (the second in command in rank), but clearly the smartest guy on the entire ship!

And with a perplexed look he asked, “Mr. Spock, which one?” To which Spock gave the absolute best answer! He simply replied, “Let’s let the Captain decide!” To which point it became crystal clear to everyone, who was in fact the real Captain James T. Kirk!

Entrepreneur, have you ever heard the old Chinese proverb that asks the question, “Do you know who the twin to a wise man is?”  The correct answer is a fool! Huh? Meaning- to look at them physically, you can’t possibly tell them apart!

It’s only through their actions, can the correct answer be found! Bingo!

Looking Like You’re Successful In Business Is Not Quite The Same As Being Successful In Business!

You see, just because two people (in this case) the two Captain Kirk’s,may have had temporarily had similar facial marks, it was only when real leadership qualities had to be exhibited, could the real Captain Kirk be revealed! Bingo! (Does anybody else happen to remember this particular episode BTW? Because it was one of my all time favorites!)

So that’s the powerful leadership qualities that can be discovered from an old original episode of Star Trek. Any questions?

  1. Funny you should mention leadership from a TV program.

I had a management class once that used the movie ‘Twelve O’Clock High’ as a demonstration of leadership and found it very useful. In fact there are lots of movies and TV shows that do the same, even Startrek 🙂

True leaders inspire and excite. They help you learn how to direct yourself and make sound decisions. Totally opposite of people who are self-absorbed, put others down, criticize and don’t inspire anyone to do anything.

    • Hey great to hear from you Liz!

Yea, I guess when you’re open to possibilities, you can find inspiration, and examples of leadership from just about any source.
Including an old episode from the original Star Trek series!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! I truly appreciate it!

  2. Another great analogy Mark and I am also a fan of the original show. I’ve worked with both kinds of leaders – those that talk a good game and those that lead by example, and I’ll take the later every time!

    • Awesome Marquita!

I’m so glad you got some value out of it. And I’m with you, I’ll take those that actually walk the walk over
those that merely talk it, any day of the week.

And I like you I much prefer the original series over the updated series remake.

And I didn’t even care for any of the feature films, with the original cast members.
BTW, so how the the heck do you know that’s Kirk’s middle name?LOL?

Did he ever reveal it on one of the original episodes? And now that I think about it.

I guess I could have probably Google d it!LOL! I didn’t even think about that until just now!

Thanks so much for your continuous support and for sharing your thoughts! I so appreciate both!
