So did you or anyone you know ever have a paper route when you were a kid? Do your kids or any relatives kids have one now? Believe it or not, that lowly paper route can and did (if you had one), teach you an awful lot about successfully marketing your business, products and or services.

You remember “how” much preparation went into setting everything up, before you even delivered one paper? And as a kid, it was a huge decision to forego playing with friends after school or going home watching as much television as you could, before your parents decided it was time to get your home work done! Remember?

Of course, when you finally got that paycheck, suddenly you were experiencing a new found freedom, right? You had choices! Yes! Not to mention a new found respect among your peers!

Before diving head long into the meat of this post, have you ever had your local paper delivered by a kid? And did you ever have to change them? If you had more than one paper carrier over the years, you’ll really appreciate these three vital marketing lessons.

 1.) Marketing lesson # one: First off, whenever the kids throw the paper everywhere but on the porch! And you call the office directly to complain! Or if you happen to see the kid as they’re delivering the paper and you make them aware of the problem of the paper being everywhere but on the porch.

They immediately apologize and correct the error of their ways. Or else.

Why that’s non other than good old customer service to the rescue! Don’t you agree? And good customer service, has been known to increase your profits, right?

2.)  Marketing lesson # two: Next, as long as your kid or kids continue to deliver the papers on time, their customers are happy to remain valued customers, right?

The marketing lesson being, consistency pays the rent! Does it not? Meaning: repeat long term customers/clients is definitely where it’s at!

3.)  Marketing lesson # three: And finally, that lowly paper route gives those budding entrepreneurs their first taste of offering upsell services to their customers. For ex: some customers only want the Sunday paper delivered, while others only want the M-F service.

And sooner or later, both groups will be offered both! Because those kids have already figured out that it’s much cheaper to get a little more money out of existing customers, than trying to create brand new ones!
