Where You're Going Wrong By Confusing Cheap Trophies With Low Value!

Where You’re Going Wrong By Confusing Cheap Trophies With Low Value!

Honestly, have you ever won one of those  really cheesy cheap trophies? You know may be as a second or third place constellation prize of some kind. Like maybe, by taking third place in a local karaoke contest!.

You know, it’s the type that you’re not really all that proud of displaying outright, so you keep it (either) tucked away safely  in either your basement or garage.

Now picture this; you’re driving along and you come to a stop light;and as you casually glance to your right waiting for the light to turn green, you notice what appears to be an extremely well dressed man, in what appears to be a rather expensive $1K -$2K tuxedo!

And he appears to be feverishly digging through the trash. Not fully sure what’s going on, you pull over to see “how” you might be able to help.

You casually walk over and discover this well dressed man, who it turns out isn’t homeless, even though he’s feverishly digging through the trash, desperately trying to retrieve this really cheesy cheap trophy! At least that’s what he tells you! Partially confused, you offer to give him $15 dollars so he can go buy a new one!

And suggest, he doesn’t need to degrade himself like this! That’s when he looks up (temporarily) and informs you, that you totally don’t get what it represents to him!

Where You’re Totally Missing The Boat If You Equate Cheap Trophies With Low Value!

Now before letting the (real) cat out of the bag. Try if you will to imagine that particular scenario. And as you start to really give this guy the once over, to your shock and utter amazement! This guy is either wearing an incredibly high end fake Rolex or that watch he  has on ,has got to easily be worth ten grand!

So why in the heck, is he feverishly digging around in the trash for some cheap trophy, that couldn’t cost more then ten or twenty dollars! When he easily has a gold chain on worth at least ten grand and a watch to match, that has to at least be worth that much as well!

And “what” pray tell if anything, does this totally bizarre situation, have to do with you making more money and cheap trophies? Fair enough.

Cheap Trophies Is One Thing And Oscars Are Something Else Entirely!

Here’s the real deal! Picture this same extremely well dressed man, in a room with about 300 more well dressed men and women, and a staggering 85% of them are all self made multi millionaires! (Meaning: they didn’t inherit their wealth!)

And it turns out, 40% of them are desperately seeking one of these extremely cheap trophies, because it’s called an Oscar! Huh? That’s right! See, if that cheesy $15 dollar piece of plastic was found in a garbage can behind a Mom & Pop corner store or you won it in your fantasy football league!

Who’d care, where you left it!

But when that same incredibly inexpensive trophy, is called an Oscar! Well, you can see how and why it’s so coveted! So what’s the huge take away? Elementary entrepreneur, elementary! Recognition!

Your customers or clients crave it! Give it to them (already!) And watch your long term profits soar! “What” the heck do you mean, you don’t know how to acknowledge them!

In that case, it’s probably worth your time to find out how to do so! Don’t you agree?

  1. Hey Mark,

I was scratching my head wondering where you were going with this too but I agree with Geri, great story!

It’s what we perceive as valuable to us and I have to admit, I’m pretty sentimental so those types of cheap trophies have more meaning to me then the next guy.

Great lesson though and I’d heard the story about the vacuum salesman and I agree about the ethical bride. I think in order to get most people to buy what you offer having a great incentive to do so will bring you more sales.

Thank you for sharing this lesson Mark and be sure to have a great week.

    • Wow! Thanks Coach!

I was hoping to sort of throw a slight curve, before cutting to the chase!LOL!

Because sometimes it really helps to demonstrate something by showing how
it relates to something completely different! Then the real message sort of jumps out and grabs you!

  2. Hi Mark,

Great story and so true. It’s what you perceive to be valuable that counts not what others see as valuable. That, so called, cheap trophy had meaning and emotion attached to it.
