Why Extremely Savvy Entrepreneurs Don’t Just Market Their Businesses They Leverage Their Efforts!

(And So Should You And I!)

So entrepreneur (and or) ladies & gentlemen; do you happen to have a favorite comedian you’re really fond  of? Or do you happen to have an all time favorite comedy, that every so often you can (not only) watch, but actually laugh as you watch it repeatedly?

(That seems to be getting tougher & tougher these days!Would you agree?)

I realize that might seem like a rather odd opening set of questions, for a blog post that, (on the surface anyway), is supposed to be about extremely savvy entrepreneurs, and how they effectively market their cash challenged small businesses and or services etc.

But bare with me here for just a second. Because I’m going to focus on entertainers here.

Especially stand up comics, because believe it or not, with the exception of the mega superstar comedians, like mega rock star Jerry Seinfeld, (the late great) Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Kevin Hart, David Chappelle  or Whoopi etc.

The vast majority of them, are constantly on the road, constantly roaming from town to town and playing rather small, not so nice venues. And constantly hoping for that one mega big break, where they start consistently landing semi substantial (big screen) and or TV movie roles and or becoming a regular on a hit (prime time) television show.

So without question, they are in essence, small business owners, (or if you prefer) service providers, and their product is good old fashion “comedy!” And until(or unless) they hit the big time! They are forever trying every which way to build their brand and sustain a steady income!(Just like the rest of us! 😎 )

So let’s see “how” they (or you) might not only aggressively market their business (and or service), but strategically leverage it to the hilt as well!

So Why Or How Is It That Some Extremely Savvy Entrepreneurs Don’t Just Aggressively Market Their Business They Leverage Their Efforts To The Hilt Too?

(And “How” Can You And I Do The Same?)

For this particular example (so that) you can really see some of what’s truly possible, from a strategic marketing stand point anyway. Let’s use current funnyman, superstar stand up comic Kevin Hart.

Because in reality, long before he ever consistently appeared on the big screen, (think movie theaters), in major starring roles, or being consistently asked to host and or co-host major celebrity TV events etc, for some really big paydays! 😎

He was just your typical struggling stand up comic, waiting for that elusive big break, just like a gazillion others in his shoes!

So let’s go back in time for just a second, when Kevin was just another up and coming, young and dismally broke struggling comic, that while showing much promise, was still playing the much smaller, and or far more quaint venues that might seat at best, two or three hundred people max!(Think local and nationally recognized comic specialty night clubs!)

And back then, when he wasn’t traveling to the area where he was playing by a major movie studio sponsored limo!Instead, he picked up his own traveling cost, which meant,(in those early days) he wasn’t staying in rather pricey four or five star hotels, with round the clock room service at his disposal! 😎 (Ah the good old days! 😎 )

And the major late night TV host’s weren’t in constant contact with his personal agent and or booking agency, begging him to appear on their shows!

No to this point, he was still filling in as just one of five to seven struggling stand up comics, on a venue that typically lasted two to three hours! And back then, he clearly wasn’t a headliner just yet!

Just Because Comics Get Paid To Make You Laugh Doesn’t Mean They Can’t Be Entrepreneurs!(Right?)

But after several years of constantly criss crossing the country and performing at all of the major comedy houses and starting to develop a name and unique “brand” for himself, he was slowly able to start being booked as a main stream headliner solo act!

Still, to this point in his personal evolution, major Hollywood film execs weren’t quite beating a path to his door just yet! But at least now, he was starting to be able to consistently draw enthusiastic paying crowds of 1,000 to 2,500 people!

And no longer needed to share traveling expenses and or hotel room cost, with other struggling comics! 😎 And no more having to temporarily crash at friends, in laws and or family members homes and or apartments etc!

Because now, (he was finally) starting to be able to consistently pay his own rent! 😎

And with that as a back drop, let’s see “how” he might (and or a future struggling and up and coming comedian), in his exact same position, might aggressively market their efforts to the hilt and then some! And generate some serious passive back end income along the way..

Being An Entrepreneur Doesn’t Always Have To Mean You Invent Things! (Does It?)

So let’s say Kevin (and or)entrepreneurial comedian X, is starting to consistently draw paying crowds of 1,500 plus people! In other words, they’re starting to develop a reliable fan base! Now strictly for illustration purposes, let’s say their audience is split 50/50.

(Of course it’s a totally unrealistic example, but it makes demonstrating the math so much easier! 😎 )

Meaning, of the 1,500 paying audience, at least half (750) (or X) are women. So at the end of each show, (just before) Kevin (and or) entrepreneurial comedian X, says goodnight.

Kevin instructs the ladies to rush over his mobile responsive WordPress blogs lead capture page. This way they can enter to win a dozen roses, a box of gourmet chocolate and a seven foot personally autographed teddy bear!

And this exact same “love package”, (courtesy of Kevin of course) will be delivered by special courier, at least four times a year, provided the winners merit it.

They will potentially be delivered to their home, where they work and or their own business, on the recipient’s birthday, Valentines Day, Mothers Day (if applicable) and or their wedding anniversary, (if applicable.)

However, in reality, what Kevin (and or) entrepreneurial comedian X is really doing, is participating in a well thought out joint venture (JV) arrangement, with an extremely reputable florist, major gourmet chocolate supplier, and a major teddy bear manufacturer.

Because as the ladies rush to his WordPress blogs special lead capture page for a chance to win this $697 (or X) dollar value! And all is certainly not lost here. As you recall, the other half of Kevin’s audience are men.

So Kevin ask’s which one of the guys in his live audiences, would also like to send one of these “love packages” to that special lady in their life!In which case, Kevin directs them to be sure and grab one of his special lead capture page business cards, the three attractive young women that are stationed near the front door, (and are now frantically and enthusiastically waving), are waiting to hand them on their way out.

Who Says Being An Entrepreneur Can’t Be Fun And Extremely Profitable?

And those business cards have a special code number on them, which in reality is Kevin’s affiliate number! So every guy & gal that registers as Kevin is traveling the country and performing his act to sold out crowds of 1,000 to 2,500 fanatical fans!

And let’s say he tours the country back and forth, for at least three years performing his unique brand of stand up comedy.

And at the end of his three year marathon run, he now has his very own opt in email (and or) text message subscriber list of 50,000 strong and still growing with each subsequent live, sold out performance!

Way to go Kevin!(And remember, half of his opt in email list subscriber base (25,000) of them are women!

Here’s where the super marketing leverage opportunities really start to kick in.Since Kevin has been having each of his live performances video taped and professionally edited, via his very own and newly formed, high tech production company.(Equipped with the very latest in high tech gadgetry!)

And he, (meaning his professional marketing team) periodically sends his lists the following types of super VIP, (extremely time sensitive) offers! They can buy any five recorded, live 90 minute performances, for just $37 dollars (or X!)

Where as, (typically) every streamed performance would normally retail for $24.99 each! So that’s a savings of a whopping 70% off what Kevin’s non VIP, (read that as non opt in email subscriber based) fans would pay for the exact same product!

In part two we’re gonna go even deeper! But for now, hopefully you can see and appreciate how some extremely savvy entrepreneurs, can and should market their business and leverage their efforts to the hilt!Don’t you agree? Great! See you in just a little bit, in part two!

  1. Hi Mark,

Sounds like Kevin has been taking entrepreneurial lessons from you … lol

Gotta be outside the box, for sure. Marketing is a good thing to do, but there are so many ways to leverage your marketing efforts that your competition just never thinks of. And it make the whole process a lot more fun, too, doesn’t it? Maybe I should put “three attractive women” who are “frantically and enthusiastically waving” on one of my exit pops… ha ha

I can always count on a free flow of creative ideas when I visit your blog, Mark.

  2. Hi Mark,

I really enjoyed reading your post. I need to learn to be more creative in things I do online, just as you explained that Kevin did. Wonderful article and I’m going to be thinking on some “Out of the box” ideas for my visitors.

  3. Hi Mark

    Thanks for this!

I like the way you have used the example of entertainers to make your point. And for sure, entertainers are self-employed business folk – just like you and me. Of course their ‘product’ has to be good, but I’ve noticed that the most successful entertainers with the longest careers aren’t necessarily the most talented.

I’ve also noticed that those with the most endurance are also very good on the business side of things. They manage their brand, they surround themselves with the right people, they’re not substance abusers, they’re good to their fans (customers), and finally they keep refreshing themselves by staying creative.

Not really different to how we – as online marketers and small business people – need to conduct ourselves, right Mark?

    Thanks again Mark!

  4. Hi Mark,

That’s actually a pretty good idea. And even the men may be inclined to participate in the drawing to win the prize and give it to their lady to earn major brownie points.

That’s really unique. And one again it touches on the fact that everyone loves a valuable freebie. 🙂

  5. Very creative and I never would have expected an approach like this from a comedian but it makes perfect sense the way you described it Mark. As usual you challenge us to get creative and you’ve definitely got my mental wheels spinning with this one. Thanks for the inspiration!
