Three Ways Some Internet Marketing Companies Actually Cannibalize Themselves!

(And What You Must Do Now To Avoid That Happening!)

Ever heard someone say, you’ve taken two steps forward and three steps back? Or how some of their efforts are actually working against them? Believe it or not, this sort of thing happens all the time.

But would it surprise you to know, either directly and or indirectly, some Internet marketing companies are actually cannibalizing their chances for long term success? It’s true.

Of course like most things, nobody actually starts out to purposely shoot themselves in the foot, right?

In fact, as you read about these three incredibly simple ways, that you might actually be routinely shooting yourself in the foot, notice how easy they are to not only fall into but, avoid as well….

So What Are These Three Ways Some Savvy Internet Marketing Companies Actually Cannibalize Their Chances For Long Term Success?

First of all, let’s quickly define what’s meant by the term “cannibalizing”, at least in a practical business sense.Certain things that (you or I) are constantly doing, with regards to building our businesses, (on or offline), that actually sabotage our chances for long term success!

However, they’re often cleverly disguised as profit producing activities! When in reality, nothing could be further from the truth! For ex:

Take a look at these three all too common instances.

1.) The first way some Internet marketing companies cannibalize themselves: Not to step on any toes here! But entrepreneur, whenever a first visitor lands on your primary money making, mobile friendly WordPress blog and or website etc.

And the very first thing they notice are a bunch totally unrelated “Google Adsense” ads plasterd everywhere! This sends the not so subtle message, that your primary mission is to turn a buck first and help them solve any of their problems and or concerns later! Just saying!

Of course the whole point of your blog is to attract your specific target audience and offer your extremely valuable products and services etc!My friend, you’re not accomplishing that objective, with ads “Google Adsense” and or unrelated banner ads plastered all over your site!

2.) The second way some Internet marketing companies cannibalize themselves: Next, here’s another extremely big no, no!

Ever heard the phrase, “you’ve got the cart before the horse?” Sounds a little counter intuitive for sure. But stated in plain layman’s terms.

You’re trying to sell, before your online visitor and or offline prospect, has gotten a chance to even know, like and trust you yet?

You know the famous “Seth Godin” analogy, you’re proposing marriage on the very first date!Meaning: before you’ve even given your prospect a chance to get to know who you are, and what you stand for!

You’re attempting to separate them from their hard earned money!(What’s up with that?)

Entrepreneur There’s More To Successful Internet Marketing They Just Asking Your Prospects For Money!

3.) The third way some Internet marketing companies cannibalize themselves: Hey look, every body understands and totally respects  and appreciates the fact that you’re not running a non profit operation!

But entrepreneur, enough with the distasteful affiliate links plastered all over your site as well!

Hey, I’ve got affiliate links on my site, and you are more than welcome, (and are highly) encouraged to click on them and invest in a product or service, that’s definitely going to help move your business forward!

But they’re not everywhere on my site, correct? Are yours shouldn’t be either! Because again, you’re sending a not so subtle message, that increasing your bank account comes first and solving and or addressing your target audiences needs, comes in a distant second!

The accompanying video, lays out at least five more (rarely) mentioned ways, your long term profits will invariably suffer as well!

So definitely do yourself and your bottom line a huge favor and check it out!Without overstating things here, basically in a nutshell, that’s how some extremely savvy Internet marketing companies, actually cannibalize their chances for long term success? Any questions?

  1. Hello Mark… what a great article! I agree 100% I do not like going to websites with the unrelated Google Adsense or things constantly popping out at you. I much prefer sites with quality content and their recommendations for products. I’m sure they make money but not from me!

  2. Hi Mark,

You pin pointed the few things that make most bloggers fail. Even i studied few things for this, saw some heat maps. wrote some article on loading time, speeding up your website and SEO things.

What you said is absolutely correct, in order to make money quick people try to flood there websites with adds and affiliate links than gaining trust and delivering value.

You must have thought deeply before writing this article, how people give away some golden entrepreneurship opportunities just to make money quickly.

I’m sharing this article, as i find this useful for new ones.

  4. Hey Mark,

Marketing and sales has changed a lot. Before you can use mass marketing techniques to get customers (hens plastering your adsense and affiliate ads all over your site).

More so now, you want to specifically target people based on their specific wants and need. This is why we should focus on building the relationship first and getting your customers to know, like and trust us first. We can do this by providing solutions to their issues with the rapport building.

This will definitely make you stand out from the rest. Thanks for sharing Mark! Have a good one!

  5. Hi Mark,

I agree 100% with you here! When I go to a blog and there are advertisements everywhere .. all over the sidebar blinking at me, the impression I always get is that either this person was trained to do this the wrong way, or they are desperate for a few dollars.

    It just ruins their brand.

Yes, we can put pertinent things on our side bar..just a few. If it is our own product…great! Because those who are really interested in you will be a wonderful person on your list.

When it comes to affiliate marketing, there are many ways to do it properly. Having a link that goes to someone else is one of the biggest turn offs I ever see. Sure it is fine to have an affiliate product and we can even do a review on it to properly introduce it to our readers. But having it on our side bar is ok. The trick there is to do a video yourself telling your readers why it is great and have them opt in to YOU…

I could go on a rant but I’ll keep it short lol.

Thanks for writing about this Mark. More people need to know about this.

    • I couldn’t agree more Coach!LOL!

So very well said, although truth told, when I first started out online,
completely clueless to the way the pros do it, I was guilty of running off
      my potential traffic too!LOL!

But hey, you graduate, take the cotton out of your ears and start really paying close
attention to what the successful online marketers are consistently doing and before
yo realize it, things are actually moving in the right direction!

Imagine that! Thanks so much for adding to the conversation!

  6. Hi Mark,

Omg, you said it! I hate sites with the overbearing adsense ads. Some sites even have a paid ad pop up over the context slowing down the entire load of the page. It’s like Can I read something first before you try to upsell me.

Some sites are just overloaded with ads that it takes over the page. It leaves me wondering do they really need all of this to run their site, like to cover expenses.

Great points as always. I really hope everyone is taking this in.
