So entrepreneur, do you also happen to thoroughly enjoy a really good Pay Per View (PPV) title fight every now and again? (Or is it just me?)
Cool! Now of course if you’re not necessarily a sports fan in general (and or) a fight fan in particular. That’s okay too!
Because it’s still very possible and (highly) likely, that you will still discover an extremely valuable proven marketing gem or two, in this particular post. Now just depending on when you’re actually reading this particular post.
As of Saturday night May 2nd 2015, two legendary (future hall of fame fighters), that would be none other than “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather and Manny “The Beast” Pacquiao! (With emphasis on Pacquiao being referred to as “The Beast” being mine!
Anyway, their long awaited (and incredibly lucrative) showdown (I might add) finally took place on Saturday night May 2nd 2015! And pretty much as was expected (from my particular point of view anyway) Mayweather was awarded a unanimous decision.
(Hey! Absolutely “no” extremely nasty emails protesting the decision will be entertained and or tolerated! Just saying!)
Anyway, so right about now you’re -officially wondering- “what” if anything some incredibly lucrative, and long awaited championship boxing match, has to do with your current and or future marketing plans, correct? Well, it’s really not that complicated!
And actually (there are) at least three incredibly powerful and potentially profitable, long term marketing lessons to be learned and emulated, from their long awaited and much anticipated “showdown!” Say “what?” That’s correct! Take a look and see for yourself!
So “What” Exactly Are These Three Incredibly Powerful And Potentially Profitable Marketing Lessons That You Supposedly Can And Should Definitely Learn From The Recent Floyd Mayweather VS Manny Pacquiao Champioship Fight?
First of all, (truth told) this much anticipated mega showdown between these two legendary fighters, (with Floyd currently being just days shy of turning 38) and Manny Pacquiao currently 36!
It should have actually happened (at least) four or five years ago when (with all due respect!) both fighters were much closer to their respective primes!
In any event, (rumor) has it! The fight is still expected (once the official final tally is complete), to gross somewhere in the neighborhood of just north of a mere $200 million dollars! Give or take!
In any event, it’s still an incredibly respectable neighborhood, would you not agree? That said; let’s “see” how or “what” if any, three incredibly powerful marketing lessons, can and definitely should be learned from their much anticipated “mega fight!” What da ya say?
First though: ladies & gentlemen, just within the last six months or so. About “how” many different major “product launches” do you think you’ve been VIP (email mail marketing) alerted to? “Why” you ask?
Because just like Mayweather and Pacquiao’s mega fight! If you really stop and take careful notice! You will discover at least three incredible similarities.
Case in point: Notice three incredible similarities between the Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao super fight and your all too typical major product launch!
Mega Super Fights Aren’t The Only Place Really Good Marketing Takes Place You Know!
1.) First major marketing lesson # one: Typically (as was and is the case) with your typically successful major product launch of any kind! You first have the proverbial (highly orchestrated) and joint venture promoted build up period, correct?
However, in the case of the recent super fight! The all important build up period! Also more affectionately referred to as the “hype building” phase! In the case of Mayweather vs Pacquiao, it lasted nearly five years and some change! Not recommended as a proven online “product launch” marketing strategy BTW! Just saying!
(Note: When you’re talking about grossing that type of “scratch”, more often than not, it’s takes a little time for both parties to hash out all of their collective differences!)
Anyway, typically “what” happens as in the case of a successful product launch of some kind. Usually at least a few weeks out, before the official big day actually arrives!
We (absolutely) get bombarded (non stop), with never ending video presentations (landing in our in boxes) from various rather successful online marketing gurus and guruettes, praising this next big thing! And telling us “why” we simply have to have it! Correct? Yep!
Until “finally” when the big day actually arrives and our collective “baited anticipation levels” have simply reached a feverish pitch! In which case we’re ready to whip out our credit cards and push those buy buttons yesterday! Right?
Or at least that’s “how” it’s suppose to work, when they’re selling us the darn thing! So this highly orchestrated period, (as was) the case in the Super fight! Rolls on for a few! And getting us all worked up in the meantime!
2.) Second major marketing lesson # two: Next, the (so called) big day does indeed “finally” arrive! And as is the case with “Mayweather vs Pacquiao!”
Every body agrees way ahead of time which one of us will actually order (pay for) the fight! And the rest of us, (usually ten or twelve of us,-give or take- pitch in $10 to $15 dollars apiece!
And somebody’s wife, girlfriend (and or) live in significant other etc! They spring for that night’s cooking duties! Plus we usually get pizza, beer, chips, dips, buffalo and or barbecue wings delivered too!
And of course the betting and proverbial pre fight trash talking is in full swing! That is,until the issue is officially decided in the ring and or on the playing field etc!
(Because, (hopefully) you know and understand this exact same (predominately) male orientated ritual, takes place every year, on Super Bowl Sunday as well! Correct?
Now then; for those of you that are still following this! This part and or phase is now referred to as “the event!”
3.) Third major marketing lesson # three: Phase three; this is the part where (both) immediately after “the event” and for the next few days!
All of the so called expert (pundits), on both TV and radio and various print media as well, immediately start with their proverbial “what” went wrong with their “sure thing” pre fight analysis predictions etc!
And of course, all bets are finalized after the event, and as is typically the case! More times than not! The losers among us, suddenly remember they have to be at (you d fill in the blanks!)
And (of course) without fail! Help themselves to one last premium beer and slice of pizza, (with a topping of course!)before officially hitting the road!
And of course declaring (more like protesting) the entire time! That the fight (or “whatever” the particular sporting event was, somehow “fixed!” Sore losers!
Anyway, as is the case with your most successful product launches! You have your post event marketing activities, that are designed to convince you and I to “finally” come to our collective senses and spend a few dollars!
Before those juicy X amount of dollars in “fast decision making power bonuses” disappear completely! “Hurry! You’ve only got X amount of hours left!”
Sound familiar? Yep! So that’s (basically) the main three incredibly powerful marketing lessons, that you can and definitely should learn from the recent Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao Super fight! Any questions?
Now as is customary during this part of our show.

Hi Mark,
I like the way you tied in the PPV show with marketing product launches. When launching something, one has to prepare the audience by raising questions, telling them it is the next best thing than ice cream that is coming. Cause a “stir” in activity.
Then the Launch day comes. You are prepared for this juicy product to sell and need to get more buzz out there. And when following launches…as I’m currently doing now, you can also get things at a lower price point with plenty of free stuff attached to it. Oh joy, make that quick decision before it goes away.
Phew…I just made it and purchased so much stuff, now it is jacked up at least 30% more than getting in the launch itself. Well that’s how I do like to purchase a few things I need on the market.
This is what the “big players” are doing. So I think to myself, why can’t I do it too? Mark, I’ve been studying this for a while and now get it. I see how the top marketers are doing this. Create that buzz!
If we emulate this, we too can do it. Maybe on a smaller scale at first, but once you know the how to’s you are on your way!
Thanks for another entertaining and valuable post.
-Donna
P.S. Loved the video…your voice is amazing and maybe think of doing more of this stuff….podcasts? hmmmm
