So How Does Watching American Idol Help Improve Your Small Business Marketing Plan?

So do you ever, or did you ever watch an episode of American Idol? If so, you know that (over the years) that show has had more than it’s fair share of (both) memorable and not so memorable characters, has it not? But believe it or not, that show offers just underneath the surface, a really solid and proven marketing fundamental principle, that is evergreen and, it should be emulated by  every serious small business owner and or service provider.

Especially if you are severely cash strapped at the present time.

Because just diligently applying this one universally proven marketing principle, will put you light years ahead of your all too typical competitors. Seriously.

Now if you happen to watch American Idol (on the regular) you already know and understand, that the vast majority of the contestants, have virtually no chance of ever landing a major recording contract, right? And the judges most certainly know and realize that undeniable fact too.

And guess who else most certainly recognizes that undeniable fact. The sponsors. Yep. Their investing tens or hundreds of millions of dollars in various forms of traditional advertising, because they recognize that people (potential consumers) love to be entertained as much as they loved to be educated and informed.

And both battlefield tested marketing strategies, certainly have their place. Which means these savvy advertisers recognize that if they effectively utilize a certain proven, universal marketing principle, they’re gonna be a whole lot more successful.

Which means padding their bottom line.

So What Proven Universal Marketing Principle Do The Sponsors Of American Idol Consistently Use That Your Cash Starved Small Business Definitely Should Be Using Too?

Well, before we actually go there: How about you answer a couple of rather simple (routine) questions. Because by doing so, it should help crystallize this universally proven marketing principle into your marketing psyche.

If not, let’s just say, that you are most definitely in for a far more bumpier ride than necessary! So do you really need a 65 inch state of the art flat screen television? And if your next house purchase isn’t a 12 room, fifteen million dollar mansion, complete with a built in  waterfall and state of the art movie theater style movie room.

Will the overall quality of your (current life) really be that dramatically affected? The real honest answer is, probably not.So what exactly does that potential wish list have to do with (either) watching American Idol and or formulating your next (or updating) your current small business marketing plan?

Very simply, (you see) you, me and nobody else, really “needs” to watch American Idol, do we? Nope! But (we) want and or prefer to! Bingo cadets! And these savvy advertisers are merely selling the “entertainment” angle aren’t they? Of course.

Translated: they’re selling/marketing to their audiences’s wants and not to their needs! Because nobody needs (from a medical) stand point anyway, to watch American Idol, or any other TV programming! Do they?

And if the advertisers tried to market strictly to your needs, they wouldn’t be able to consistently attract enough viewers (in their target audience geographic) for it to be worth their while. So “what’s the lesson?

Address Your Target Markets Wants And Let Your Competitors Starve Trying In Vain To Advertise To Their Needs!

Your marketing plan has to be geared to your target audiences’s wants and desires first and foremost! Not to their needs! They may need a car, but they want or desire a Lexus or 1987 Austin Martin etc.

And remember, just because a potential consumer needs something, doesn’t automatically necessarily mean they want it!

In fact, years ago, the fore runner to American idol was called “Star Search!” Remember that old relic from the 80’s? And once again, savvy advertisers, recognized that the networks needed some type of programming that would consistently draw their targeted eyeballs to the TV.

And “what” better way to consistently accomplish that than by entertaining people! And sometimes the entertainment was top notch and other times it was down right laughable! Right? But either way, it served it’s main purpose.

It consistently drew targeted eyeballs to the TV and the sponsors made a whole of money advertising/promoting their products and services! And years later, the exact same universally proven marketing concept was simply re-packaged  updated and re-named and boom! The modern day American Idol was born!

So the bottom line to it all is simply this ladies & gentlemen (and various esteemed entrepreneurs), your small business marketing plan, had better address wants first! Don’t you agree?

  1. Hi Mark,

Oh, I used to love that show “American Idol” but I didn’t watch it for several years now.

Interesting point you made here by addressing the wants and not the needs of our target audience. Although all along what is taught is to address a problem and provide the solution and if there is a problem that means there is a need for the solution.

I think your point applies more to the cases where the want and the need goes hand in hand.

For example: if I am selling a weight loss program. There are lots of fat people. Some want to lose the weight for the looks, others for medical reasons, they need to lose the weight. So, I guess I need to address both.

For those who want to lose the weight to look more attractive, I should address the beauty side of the weight loss. How they will look attractive when they lose the weight and how it will boost their self-confidence and how they will have more energy and how they will look in a tight jeans and so on…..

And for those who need to lose the weight, say for medical reasons, I have to address that need (problem) and provide the solution (medical benefits of the weight loss program).

I think in this case the wants and the needs are both addressed.

Just my 2 cents and I hope it made sense.

Thanks Mark for a great share!! Enjoy the rest of your week.

    Be Blessed,

    • Your comments are so spot on Neamat!

And yes, you are making perfect sense, with regards to those excellent benefits that you listed!

And also bare in mind, as you mentioned the “needs” angle with regards to a possible medical situation.

Your/our marketing approach would probably still be far more “attractive” by stressing the medical benefits
that would be derived from say “losing weight!”

As opposed to trying to sell from the “need to lose weight” strictly for health reasons angle!

Simply because benefits tend to be more emotional based, where as needs tend to be more logical based.

And we both know that most of us are far more likely to do something based on emotion first
      and logic second!LOL!

But either way, we’ve got to strategically sell/market our propositions. And judging from your
excellent examples, you don’t seem to have a problem knowing what or how to do that!LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable thoughts!

And for your continuous support! Both are always so greatly appreciated!
