One Thing Far Too Many Aspiring Entrepreneurs Do That They Really Shouldn’t!Part Two

As you previously discover in part one of this ongoing series, about “how” unfortunately far too many otherwise extremely savvy aspiring entrepreneurs have a tendency to choose (at least when it comes to) practical application anyway, they’ll choose to try and climb Mount Everest, as opposed to simply climbing five flights of stairs.

Now just to translate that last passage into simple every day  layman’s terms, just in case you’re starting with part two of this series and not part one. Instead of choosing a really short term money making project of some kind, that could easily be accomplished (start to finish) within one or two days max.

Sadly, far too many aspiring entrepreneurs will choose instead a far more involved -potential money making- project of some kind that at best, will take (start to finish) anywhere from 3-4 weeks or more!

And of course,  more times than not,  about a week to ten days into this “brainstorm” reality starts to set in and they end up scrapping the entire project altogether! Who honestly, can’t say they at least have “been there and done that” on more than a few occasions! ( For sure!)

But one rather semi positive quality this particular aspiring entrepreneur seems to have in spades is this!

Yours truly is definitely of the “mindset” that says, let’s start with an $89 dollar – or less- flip cam and once (or after) things get rolling pretty good, then let’s invest the $500 dollars or more in one of the more advanced James Bond type of cameras and set up!

This way at least the videos will be uploaded – if nothing else- to good old youtube and hopefully other video sharing sites, and they can start (systematically) driving some semi targeted traffic to my  lead capture page.(No matter “how” little the semi targeted traffic is!)

So Why Do So Many Aspiring Entrepreneurs Fall Way Short Of Accomplishing Their Totally Achievable Goals?

The main reason and inspiration for this follow up sequel post, is because of a comment I received in part one, by the absolutely brilliant IT and SEO expert Sherman Smith! You can and should read this excellent post he did on “why you may not be consistently reaching your goals!”

In his excellent comments in part one, Sherman so eloquently pointed out, that one of the biggest factors that far too many aspiring entrepreneurs fail to consider, is the total time cost factor that will most certainly be involved, in order (to first) learn the basic skill(s) and then get competent – and or master- them!

That’s potentially freaking huge and it’s so true! And that’s probably the main reason why so many  aspiring entrepreneurs end up scrapping their “brainstorm” money making idea(s)/projects altogether! Because of the enormous “competency” time factor that’s involved in mastering (getting competent) enough to monetize the skill(s) their pursuing!

Case in point; a while back, yours truly had this totally brilliant idea for a marketing video! Basically I was going to slice together some screen capture footage of a Power Point slide presentation I had planned, but embed the classic scene of Jack Nicoholson’s character (Colonel Nathan Jessup)  telling Tom Cruise’s character ( Lt. Daniel Kaffee ) “you can’t handle the truth!”

Entrepreneur It’s More About Moving Off Center Than It Is Completely Nailing Your Very First Try!

Ladies & gentlemen, if I do say so myself, it was going to be absolutely brilliant! Spectacular I tell you! But you know what? When I inquired about the practically of it to my video marketing guru  Coach, Julie Weishaar, she quickly reminded me, that while my project was indeed noble and was certainly very doable by the right video marketing expert with the right set of skills, such as herself! (You so have to check her out, because she totally rocks!)

It was still just a little beyond my current pay rate set of abilities! And therefore maybe I should shelve the idea just for now. Until both my practical video making and marketing skills and capabilities matched my Atlantic sized ocean ambitions!!

(Of course I reluctantly agreed and temporarily canned the blockbuster video marketing idea for now!)

But here’s the real point! To date,I currently have 427 (rather boring) Power Point type of screen  capture videos, (which just means, I’m not physically in front of the camera.) Instead, they see what’s on my computer screen, and I simply narrate the videos, hence the name screen capture type of videos.

But believe it or not, those “C” level “how to” instructional videos still manage to consistently generate some semi targeted opt in leads 24/7. In spite of the fact they can’t even begin to compete with the likes of video marketing experts such as, my video marketing guruette Coach Julie Weishaar, Brandon Lucero and or James Wedmore etc!!

They don’t have to! You see, as long as I or you have our marketing fishing poles in the water and we’re targeting the right audience! Guess what? We’re gonna consistently generate some bankable results!

But hopefully, between these two installments you can appreciate why far too many aspiring entrepreneurs really need to stop over complicating things! Don’t you agree?

  1. Hey Mark,

First thing I gotta say is wow, 427 capture screen videos for your power point presentation. But I tell you what, I bet you did them one video at a time which is why you’re getting the targeted traffic back to your site. That’s the main goal right!

Which goes to show that you don’t have to overcomplicate things in order to get some type of result. As matter of fact, it may even take you longer to learn those overcomplicated tools and strategies before you implement and eventually get the results that you want.

I also have to thank you for sharing my video and the point that I was trying to get across. Although we have big goals, in order for us to make those quantum leaps, we must build a strong foundation by breaking those big goals, into smaller goals, and sometimes we have to break those smaller goals down even further. This may sound tedious but it’s very beneficial so that you don’t waste any time spinning your wheels.

And you know that could be frustrating in and of itself. Which is one reason why so many entrepreneurs either quit and become stagnant in their businesses. Yes, as you mentioned, many times we have to take the “5 flight of stairs” instead of focusing on trying to climb Mount Everest in order to get anywhere!

Great share as usual Mark! Keep them coming!

    • Great comments Sherman!
And thank you for your extremely kind words of encouragement!

You hit on a really important point; and that being having even smaller- more doable (sub) goals if
you will, within our other sub goals, really helps make our ultimate objectives far more
      practical and achievable.

It’s sort of like when you sub niche within a sub niche, for further clarity and specialty purposes.

And I definitely agree with you, there would be a whole lot less frustrated entrepreneurs, if they
opted for the 5 flights of stairs and stopped trying to climb Mount Everest on each and every project!LOL!

And I thought your video did an excellent job of expressing the exact same concepts I was trying to convey!

So it just seemed to make perfect sense to showcase you!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable thoughts!

I very much appreciate them and your continuous support!

  2. Hi Mark

Oh gosh – those mountainous goals and ambitions I had before I realized that Internet Marketing wasn’t actually the stroll in the park that the gurus promised!

Too many projects that were way above my competency level at the time SHOULD have sent me fleeing for the TV and a bit of R&R, but I’m a stubborn soul.

More importantly, I eventually realized the benefit of investing in some training from trusted experts (not just hypey sales pages promising a fast buck).

I also did what you suggest and focused on 5 flights of steps instead of Mount Everest.

As a result I now have several smaller sources of income that I can tweak every so often and see results from, rather than putting my eggs all in one basket.

And just to prove the point, years ago I spent many days/hours setting up sites etc to promote one particular service, and go it to the point where it was bringing in a steady income.

Then the supplier revoked world-wide rights over-night and all that effort was wasted. Lots of mistakes I learned from there…. but luckily I had a few “flight of stairs” projects to help me when the “Everest” project had a landslide.

Hope your readers will learn from my mistake, and of course, your post!

    Have a great weekend. Joy

And a true dose of reality!

And I absolutely love your way of describing, our rather loftier goals as ” The Mount Everest of goals!”

Because man oh man, let me you, I too have most definitely had more than my share of those!

And like you, I too thought I’d have this WordPress/Internet marketing thing a ma jig conquered in a couple of weeks or
      less!LOL!

But it simply wasn’t to be!LOL! And so it was simply off to the next “push button” secret to online success system that
      I could find!!LOL!

But like you Joy,I too have also come to truly appreciate just “how” extremely valuable and practical those much smaller
and far less stressful “5 flight of stairs” type money making projects and systems can be!

Especially to a self confessed non techie such as myself!LOL!

Thanks as always for sharing a bit of “the real world” with us!LOL!

It’s so greatly appreciated! Continued success! And keep climbing those stairs, five at a time!LOL!
