See, the following seven mildly to extremely unpleasant occurrences are in essence the crust (if you will!) of being in business for yourself. And or the crust of entrepreneurship!

1.) Unpleasant occurrence # one : Having to deal with the fact that a major customer and or client is leaving you and or your firm for a major competitor! And nothing you said or proposed is going to change their mind! Well that totally sucks doesn’t it?

2.) Unpleasant occurrence # two: You’ve got to issue a refund and your sincerest apologies for a blunder that was clearly your companies fault and now your cash flow is temporarily seriously affected because of it!

The Crust Is Simply A Part Of The Overall Pizza Eating Experience Is It Not?

3.) Unpleasant occurrence # three: Not only has your banker said no to your request for an additional 30 -60 day extension of your current credit line terms. But now sadly she’s informing you that your current credit line terms are being renegotiated and your loan is now due in full in the next 60 days instead of the previously agreed upon 90 day deadline! Say what?

4.) Unpleasant occurrence # four: Your top sales rep and or your main business partner suddenly wants out and they expect you to cash them out preferably within the next 90 days or less, as per your written agreement!

  1. Great analogy Mark! As a small business owner we all have had challenges to deal with but its how you react and handle the challenge can make the difference between failure and success.Sometimes you need to just eat the crust and move forward! Thanks for sharing your insights!

    • Nice compliment Shelley!

And you’re so right with regards to the crust. Although I’d say even though you
may not necessarily want to eat the crust, but if by chance that turns out to be the case!

Then I definitely go with your sage advice; and that being, be done with, more forward and be sure that
you learn and grow from the experience.

Because in the end, it will you/us a much more rounded individual and entrepreneur.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! I definitely appreciate it!

  2. Hi Mark,

    Really great analogy.

Being a great and successful business owner is about dealing with all areas of business (even the bad bits/crust bits)

Good job on bringing forward an issue that many of us avoid or conveniently forget!

    Naomi

    • Isn’t that the truth!

Yea, it’s easy to enjoy the pizza, but the crust, not so much! And in the beginning
of any entrepreneurial opportunity. There’s always a lot of crust initially!LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts Naomi!

      Much appreciated!

  3. Hi Mark

Great analogy. I think most small businesses have experienced most of those “hard bits” of being in business – whether online or offline.

I try to react by putting them behind me (in the bin) and just looking forward in anticipation of the next tasty “pizza” slice. There’s usually another pizza on the horizon, so don’t dwell on the crusts!

    Have a great weekend. Joy

    • That’s a great way to handle things Joy!

But no matter how we slice it! (Pardon the pun!) crust is still crust!

Let’s just hope our’s isn’t of the cheap pizza variety!LOl!

Great to see and thanks so much as always for being both supportive
and for adding to the conversation!

Looking forward to seeing your new product when it launches!

  4. I like your analogy although at first I wondered what relevance does pizza have with entrepreneurship, makes one to think. I believe that the key here will be the right mindset and knowing how to handle each situation as it comes.

    • Absolutely Siphosith!

And that’s sort of the key! life’s “crust” if you will, will
be different for everyone, but make no mistake, everybody has got to deal
with their very own version of life’s crust!LOL!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable thoughts and for
your continuous support! Both are greatly appreciated!

  5. I really love your analogies. So clever. As for the pizza crust, you are absolutely right, even I didn’t use to eat it… Interesting to note that Pizza Hut went on to add cheese to the crust, thus forever changing the way the crust was seen… what a clever marketing twist. I wonder what we could learn from that + the analogy you have made.

    Best!

    • Thanks for the great compliment Victoria!

I truly appreciate it! And it sounds like someone
over at Pizza Hut HQ is thinking slightly outside the box.

Because I’d be willing to bet over the years they’ve gotten tons of suggestions
about how to improve the crust portion of the pizza eating experience!LOL!

Because just like you said, nobody (or very few of us!) bother to eat the crust! And so it goes with
      business!

We love landing lucrative new clients and re-signing them etc!

But giving refunds and dealing with really nasty negative reviews or coordinating with a tech
to fix this or that or our sites.

Or moving email data to a new paid autoresponder service and having to then learn how to properly use their
      service etc!

Not so much! But hey, it’s the left over crust that truly helps us appreciate the pizza it
      surrounds, right!LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable input
      and for your continuous support!

I definitely appreciate both! Let’s both keep striving to make 2015 and beyond
all it can and should be!

    • Big thanks Victoria!

Yea, some times, we tend to wanna sweep those issues or challenges,
which are just a little too inconvenient to deal with,
      right under the rug.

Hoping, they will somehow, just go away! No such
      luck, right?

Thanks for taking the time, to stop by and share
      your thoughts! They’re greatly appreciated!

  6. Great analogy Mark! You know I recall this one occasion at a hotel I worked when we were overbooked every day for a week – the owners love to hear that but of course a visitor who’s just endured a 15 hr flight plus an hour shuttle ride to get to you doesn’t want to hear there is no room at the Inn.

We’d secured alternate rooms with substantial upgrades, picked up the cost of breakfast and sent a fruit basket to each room, but were still getting complaints. So I decided to work the front desk myself one day and immediately saw the problem. The poor desk clerks were so intimidated by having to tell customers about the relocation they were avoiding eye contact and trying to move them out ASAP. So I started chatting up the arrivals and giving them sightseeing and dining tips and not only didn’t we get another complaint, several of the relocated visitors returned to our hotel to eat their meals!

After that we developed a training program for the staff to help them learn how to deal with the stuff nobody else wanted to think about – like your pizza crust.

    • That’s an awesome story M!

And you know, had you not shared the other end of that situation,
meaning the mindset of the travelers after, as you mentioned an extremely exhausting
      15 hour flight!

You can bet the last thing they want to hear is that your sold out!LOl!

But you superior marketing and customer service skills really saved the day!

That’ was some really fast thinking on your feet! Thanks much for sharing that
      excellent real world example M!

Maybe somehow I can create an example of superior customer blog post out of it!LOl! Thanks!

As always your extremely valuable input and insights as well as your continuous support is greatly appreciated!
