Introducing A Major Marketing Mistake Far Too Many Small Business Entrepreneurs Constantly Make!

(And Why You Must Avoid It!)

So entrepreneur, (please) be brutally honest here!

Is there anything more exciting, especially, (in the beginning) when you’re first going about creating some sort of digital, “how to” informational  product to sell.

You can hardly contain, (both) your overall enthusiasm and or your anticipation of the product’s ultimate success!Right?

(And or the over the top excitement, you typically feel, when you first start your very own small business and or service.)

After all, deep down in your gut, you just know, with all the time and effort, not to mention some of the additional, unexpected upfront cost, you’ve gladly foot the bill for!

How can your masterpiece, not be a runaway success, right?

And therein, lies the problem entrepreneur!Huh? Unfortunately, this is where far too many, (incredibly) promising small business solo entrepreneurial type, get into a lot of (both) financial and deeply emotional trouble!

My friend, during the mists of all this super hyper activity, a major (and all too common) marketing mistake has taken place! And if not corrected asap, all your previous (and future)hard work, and financial investments are in danger of being lost, permanently!Say what?

So What Is This All Too Common Marketing Mistake Far Too Many Small Business Entrepreneurial Type Constantly Make?

(And “How” Can You Avoid It?)

Entrepreneur, are you familiar with the old worn out saying, “putting the cart before the horse?” Sounds like a rather odd claim does it not? After all, when you really stop to think about it logically for a second.

How does an age old saying such as that, even begin to make any type of sense, right?Well, (unfortunately) it does, and it speaks volumes, to this all too common marketing mistake, far too aspiring small business owners make.

But especially aspiring, online newbie entrepreneurs. It’s just, they don’t totally realize it initially! And often, by the time they do, (at least) partially come to their senses, and or the realization of what happened. It’s often far too late!

Savvy Entrepreneurs Can’t Just By Driven Forward By Excitement And Passion Alone!(Because That Potentially Deadly Combination Is Recipe For Disaster!)

Case in point, if you stop and run the (objective) numbers, on practically every failed, (so called) launch of some overly enthusiastic entrepreneurs, brainstorm, (and or) inspiration based, “how to” information product and or service.

You’ll find, (while) they did or have diligently applied the 80/20 rule to their entire ongoing process, they got their percentages backwards!Huh?

Meaning, they should have spent, (at least) 80% of both their time and readily available resources, carefully doing so much needed, and ongoing market research!

And then doing even more! And devoted the remaining 20% (or less), of their allocated resources, to the actual creation of the publication, (and or) product etc!

The More Initial Market Research You Do The Better Overall Chances For Long Term Success Your Small Business And Or Service Actually Has!

You know, the ebooks (killer cover), and how and where you’re going to promote and market it etc.In other words, you’ve got to first establish the fact, a real viable, (and hopefully) expanding consumer market, does in fact already exist!

And all your product or service is doing,is attempting to fill a pre-existing void of some kind.

(Not invent one! 😀 ) So the two primary goals of your intense market research should:Help you establish or reveal.

1.) Primary goal # one: Beyond your gut level feelings, passion and overwhelming enthusiasm towards this particular project, does a real consumer driven market, you can actually monetize, really exist?

2.) Primary goal # two: And does it show real potential, for (both) sustainable future growth and expansion, by way of some creative uses, it was not originally created for!

Dedicated Small Business Owners Need To Make Things Easy On Themselves! (Don’t you Agree?)

2.A.)  Primary goal # three: You definitely need to establish, if your entire future premise of your marketing plans and or promotions, are trying to serve a real segment of a given potential consumers actual needs!

Or is your marketing plan based around trying to manufacture a non existent need, the targeted consumers don’t even have!

And truth told, probably never will! You see (entrepreneur), tragically, what a lot of overly enthusiastic small business owner, online entrepreneurial type do is, run and create a digital information product of some kind.

(AKA) “the cart,” before they truly know, and or have verified through diligent market research, there is any real, sustainable market demand, “the horse!”

And as a direct result, because far too many of them, either overlook, drastically discount, and or totally ignore this extremely crucial step altogether!

Your Small Business And Or Service Has Enough Real Challenges Already!

That (all too) familiar thud sound you hear, soon after they launch/release their digital info product masterpiece and or service, is the carnage of their failed project, hitting the streets of marketing reality!Ouch!

Hey, it may sound a bit cruel and or harsh! And perhaps it is! But truth told, you won’t sell, and or successfully market or promote, any business, products and or services, to a consumer market, that (either) doesn’t want or need it!

Don’t you agree? And that my friend, is the all too common, major marketing mistake, far too many aspiring small business owner, entrepreneurial types, constantly make! Any questions? Now as is customary during this part of our show.

  1. Hi Mark,

We all have inspiration, passion and aspiration of achieving our dream goal for our newly created business or even a small business in the process of making the “big step” to expand. If we don’t have a target market or a clear goal, we will be lost in between the other new entrepreneurs. Thank you for this mind provoking and honest article!

  2. This is such an important point Mark, and even though it’s fundamental business logic, people still make the same mistake again and again. I think it has a lot to do with our need for instant gratification. It’s the ever-present elephant in the room for those of us who work in personal development because people want the results but don’t like having to do the work to lay a foundation for growth. I call it the “Castles in the Sand Syndrome”. 🙂 Inspiring as always!

  3. Hi Mark,

This post (and your video that I commented on over on Youtube) raises such an important question.

Why do so many online marketers simply “guess” or at best “assume” they know what the “pain points” really are for their target audience.

In fact I wonder if some online marketers actualy know who their target audience really is and then wonder why they fail in business.

You are absolutely right when you mention that to suceed online you MUST serve a real target audience with specific real needs or face going broke…and fast!

Your superb video showed exactly the real power of mouth to mouth marketing that can be easily leveraged by some simple “left field” thinking and marketing . Very clever and very thought provoking mate.

The awesome power of hundreds if not thousands of “unique stories” about your product or services is something I really need to do some work on – you have really got my attention with this simple yet often overlooked concept.

Have shared this thought provoking post far and wide for you as well.

Many thanks again for sharing your awesome expertise Mark.

Best wishes from the remote Thai village marketer

definitely true, the extremely sound advice you’re sharing, in that,
we had better have a pretty good idea, who our real target audience is what
      their real pain points are!

Or we’re toast! Thanks so much much for your incredibly kind words and
      for sharing my content!

BTW, I used your awesome comment from another post you recently commented on and linked
