So entrepreneur where (in the world) do I begin my cautionary tale? It basically all started, when I finally decided to take a really short trip out of town, in order to visit, and catch up with a few friends and close family members.
(You can’t fault a guy for that,right?)
Hey, it really was an idealistic situation, on paper anyway. I found a reasonably priced, (round trip) airline ticket, got a chance to briefly get away, (catch some rays), get my eat on, plus visit with both friends and family members.
What can I say, it seemed like the perfect (two for one) scenario.Besides, I already had all of my blog posts scheduled for the week, and once I arrived at each different location, I was scheduled to visit, I’d simply jump online, and quickly respond to my comments, (check my email), and delete my spam etc.
All while enjoying the company of some extremely close family members and friends.Honestly, what could possibly go wrong, right?
Besides, it wasn’t like I was going away indefinitely, or leaving the country. And before anything significant could happen, I’d be back.Boy, did I ever miss the boat on this one!
Entrepreneur If Your Site Gets Hacked! (Do You Have A Reliable Back Up Plan?)
So I fly into town, get to catch up with some extremely close relatives!I also get to visit a few others on my list, and it’s Saturday, August 20th, 2016, before I’m finally able to catch my breath, long enough actually log into my site, and make sure, not only my Saturday blog post published without any hitches.
Plus verify if the other three pre scheduled posts, went off without a hitch as well.
And I actually logged into one of my primarily email accounts, and deleted a ton of spam to boot! Hey, that’s one of the main benefits of being online, correct?
Your business, is at least semi portable, right. But here’s the thing, on Monday, the 22nd, unbeknownst to me at the time, my site was viciously hacked, and my paid host, Bluehost, (and yes this is my affiliate link.)
Bluehost immediately shut my site down!Ouch! And sent me an email notice Monday, the 22nd, which unfortunately, I didn’t even notice, until I was back in town, the following Wednesday, the 24th!
Meanwhile, I have no idea what’s actually transpired, until I attempted to log in and wham!If you’ve ever had a site hacked, you know exactly what I’m referring to,right? That dreadful notice staring at you!And you kinda feel helpless, and mad as all get out too!
Entrepreneur If You Don’t Keep Your Site Or Your Plugins Updated!(It’s Not A Matter Of If Your Site Will Get Hacked, It’s More A Matter Of When!)
The way my site hacker, security experts explained to me, was this.Think of your main website as your primary residence, and each additional site, on the same server, (you techie types), know exactly what I’m saying, right?
Any who, think of any additional websites, as windows, and if any of those windows, aren’t totally secure!Guess what?
Those men & women who live to hack vulnerable sites! They take advantage. And even though I thought I was being careful, they got into my WordPress blog, and their malware caused enough problems, my paid host, really had no choice, but to temporarily shut my site down!Freaking bummer!
So as soon as I realized what had happened, and I got over the shock of disbelief!I immediately called Bluehost, to see, (what the heck) was going on, and what could and should be done asap!
I also immediately reached out to my WordPress guru, (the one and only), Jupiter Jim, for some much needed advise! And after briefly weighing my various paid options, I finally decided on the quick fix security solutions experts!
The Lowest Price Isn’t Always Your Least Expensive Option!
Okay, so here I was, facing one of three potential options! And definitely needing to get this issue resolved yesterday! After all, my credibility hangs delicately in the balance, does it not?
First.) I contacted a highly recommended security expert company by phone, who it turns out, is located on the west coast, and by my being on the east coast, there is three hour time difference. And since they didn’t offer 24 hour service.
By the time they returned my call, I had already moved on to my next option!Besides, they wanted $299 dollars up front, plus a monthly fee to boot!(Hey, I’m all for capitalism, but you gotta economize, where you can, right?
And unlike securi.net, (the initial company I contacted),they only require you to pay your monthly fee of just $30 dollars per month per site.
And no huge upfront payment, although, they prefer if you commit to at least six months worth of service, before you cancel. And they offer frequent expert monitoring, firewall protection and the whole nine yards, at extremely affordable prices!
And true to their word, they cleaned might site of it’s malware, and added some ongoing monthly firewall and continuous monitoring protection, and did so, at extremely affordable rates.
And they had me contact Bluehost, in order to get my site re-activated, once they finished their malware removal. And the (rest of) of the story, almost stopped there.
You Definitely Want 24/7 Protection! (So Don’t Sell Yourself Short!)
Third.) Upon getting my site cleaned, and getting an email notice confirmation from onehoursitefix.com. They advised me to immediately contact Bluehost, in order for them to give their approval, and to re-activate my site.
And this is how I eventually met, expert website security consultant , Chuck Rodriguez, of sitelock.com fame. Sitelock.com, (just in case) you didn’t already know, is one of the global leaders, in website security and the like!
And as of this blog post, they have a mere 10 million customers, (of all) shapes and sizes world wide!
(Important note:And as Chuck gladly shared with me, his company recently did some work, for superstar pop diva Beyonce!) Not too shabby, right?
And my web host, Bluehost, is just one of their major accounts! And they handle the (really) intense security issues, for the likes of companies the size of Bluehost, they also currently partner with other noteable heavyweights such as GoDaddy,Ipower,HostGator,BizLand,Host Papa and so many others!
It’s Best To Have At Least Some Idea Who Your Expert Go To Sources Are Before You Actually Need Them!
Yea, their definitely sort of a big deal!Anyway, I was referred over to Chuck, and as fate we have it, we got to chatting and chatting!
Because, it took Onehoursitefix.com, two tries, and (truth fully told), a bit more than an hour or two, to completely finish their mission!
And during my (highly) educational chat with Chuck, he really opened my eyes (wide) to quite a bit, regarding various comprehensive website security issues!(As much as any pure laymen could possibly learn, in an incredibly short period of time!)
And had I known, what he freely shared before hand, well, let’s just say, sitelock would now have, ten million and one extremely satisfied customers worldwide!
Chuck was extremely gracious! So much so, I told him, the very least I could, (and was) more than willing to do, was to share both his companies website, and (with his approval!), his personal email address.
You Can And Should Cut Corners On Certain Expenses! (But Your Website Security Definitely Isn’t One Them!)
So if for some reason, you ever find yourself in need of some extremely qualified, expert website security services/analysis etc! He’s definitely the man to see! Thanks Chuck!
I truly appreciate the incredible service, and education, you offered to a non customer!Should you ever wish to correspond with him, you can reach me him @, crodriguez@sitelock.com.This guy definitely knows his stuff, and the time investment, will definitely be well worth your time!
I know some of you, have been wondering, what the heck was going on with my site as of late! Now you know! But (ladies & gentlemen), do yourself a big favor, and make sure your site(s), are fully protected!
Because, trust me when I tell you! Having one of your sites hacked, and temporarily shutdown, is no fun!

I was so glad to see your site back up Mark and thanks for sharing your story! I have experienced having a website hacked so I know that feeling you’re talking about when you realize what’s happened. I believe I have a good combination of safeguards now, but I try to stay up on the latest issues and always, ALWAYS keep my plugins up to date, regularly backup files, and probably scan both my site and my computer for issues more than I really need to but I’d rather be safe than sorry. 🙂

Hi Mark,
Great to know you got away for a while. But getting your site hacked is no joke. Bluehost is a reliable and wonderful business. I too use them on some of my sites because not only are they great, but they do have a wonderful customer service. They are “on it” when it comes to hosting.
For my main site, I do have a managed host which is more expensive, but they will text me if something even is fishy lol. For the rest of my sites…Bluehost all the way!
