How Top Local Businesses Rock Email Marketing Without Relying On Their Websites To Do So!

 (And How You Can Too!)

So ladies & gentlemen, “how” long have you been actively using some type of pro-active email marketing strategies and or tactics?

Now one of the true keys to long term success (especially) online, is to not place too much emphasis and importance on the type of results that you see, read and or hear about, with regards to the big time gurus and guruettes!

Because for one thing, they’ve been around a lot longer in the marketing trenches than you and I have. Right?

And their go to networks are a heck of a lot bigger (and are constantly growing), plus they’re filled with far more influential people, than you and I currently have access to. And may never have that kind of access to.

Plus, they typically have combined  on and offline lists totals that are in the ten’s of thousands (if not) the hundreds of thousands of subscriber range. And they can also network (joint venture) with other extremely highly visible and accomplished marketers and leverage their outrageously large lists as well!

Now honestly, if they personally have access to a subscriber opt in email list of 85,000 subscribers (or more!) and they typically average a 15% open rate or higher.

And you’ve got a mere 1,245 opt in subscribers (or less!), but you average a (very impressive) 19% open rate. Which of the two of you, is still going to have more actually eyeballs, not only consistently reading your message, bot clicking on your links and purchases your products and services? Bingo!

So don’t get all winged out about  that sort of stuff! Because the fact of the matter is, there are several extremely savvy local (small to large) business owners and or service providers, that totally rock their email marketing activities, without relying heavily on (either) huge followings on social media and or high organic (free) listings in the major search engines!

And they also do it without paying directly for their traffic using potentially expensive Pay Per Click (PPC ) ad campaigns of any kind! So what’s their “secret?”….

So How Do Extremely Savvy local Business Owners Of All Shapes And Sizes Consistently Rock Their Email Marketing Campaigns Without relying On Their Websites Ranking High On The Major Search Engines?

Well, first of all, it’s really not a “secret!” Which means anybody (including you) can and should copy their proven success driven marketing blueprint.Because all they primarily do is rely on good old fashion “ethical bribery!” Because it works practically every time!Huh?

Take for ex; one of my absolute “favorite” hypothetical marketing examples to illustrate these points. Let’s take one of the more popular (and therefore) successful furniture retailers in your particular area.

Practically every successful (small to large) furniture retailer in your particular area, probably has (at least) some sort of state of the art WordPress website, if not a WP website and blog, agreed?

However, even though they probably have (or will) in the not so distant future, spend a ton on one of the James Bond type of WordPress websites and WP blogs etc. Guess what? They’re not relying on the major search engines, a huge social media presence and or potentially expensive Pay Per Click (PPC) ad campaigns to drive highly targeted traffic to their lead capture pages! Nope!

Instead, since more than likely, they first use a lot of the traditional on and offline advertising/marketing methods in order to get those all important first time customers into their ever expanding showroom.

Which means, that furniture concern is (typically) averaging anywhere from a low of $250 0 $750 dollars (or more) per lead! So no, using local newspaper, local TV and or local radio ads to drive sales, is not cheap!

However, (here’s where) they tend to differ from their major other major local competitors!

This furniture concern (knows) and realize all too well, how vitally important it is to entice as many as possible of (both their) first time visitors and customers to part with their (all important) online contact information. (Simply put get them to join their opt in email list and or text message database etc.)

Strategic Email Marketing Definitely Doesn’t Have To Be Elaborate And or Expensive In order To Be Extremely Effective!

(Would You Not Agree?)

And “how” do they consistently accomplish this seemingly monumental task? Easy! They strategically use the two evergreen marketing “secret” weapons! And what (pray tell) would those two secret weapons be, you skeptically ask? Why they would be non other than the all powerful -evergreen- “free drawing” and good old fashion “ethical bribery” what else?

For ex: ladies & gentlemen, would you not agree (whole heartily) that you should always treat all your customers and or first time visitors extremely well? Of course! However, you should also treat your best long term repeat customers even better! Right? Absolutely!

Here’s “how!” Your best customers should always get your best perks and or benefits! For ex: interest free financing for the next 24 months (two years!) is that not a great benefit? Or what about this! “No money down” financing terms on any purchase over $100 (or X) amount! (You gotta strategically price test entrepreneur.)

Or what about this, first exposure to the the brand new spring and fall collections, also accompanied by your absolute best financing terms! How’s that sound?

Or what about this? Special -first notice- to be made aware of (before the general public) of any repossessed furniture and or appliances. And free shipping on any orders over X amount!

Well, guess what all these benefactors all have in common, why don’t cha? They’re all VIP opt in email marketing recipients! Huh? In other words, simply by joining the furniture concerns (or your) opt in and or text message database.

You Can’t Go Too Far Wrong By Consistently Ethically Bribing Your Best Long Term Repeat Customers And Or Clients!

They get all of these perks,(and more!) that the general public and or non subscribers/ regular customers don’t! So which side of the ledger would you prefer to be on, if you were a customer of this particular furniture store!

You got that right! So hopefully you can see and appreciate “how”  these extremely savvy local business owners and or service providers (of all shapes and sizes) (just like you!) consistently rock their email marketing campaigns, without relying on high ranking pages in any of  the major search engines and or  a huge social media presence! And still manage  to consistently drive tons and tons of highly targeted traffic to some of  their best market tested lead capture pages!

  1. He Mark, excellent post!

I stick with old school snail mail. That is what works for my free support services. Lots of people read email and trash it. Yet, having a beautiful postcard created by me and written. They, keep them and love it.

This has always worked based on my 3 days follow up to make sure they got it. Simple and only .33 cents. WOW.

Email is not personal enough for me. Yet, what ever works is great for each of us.

Thanks for sharing this usable information.

    • No question you are correct my friend!

However, we both know and totally understand and appreciate that in order to
leverage ourselves and rather inexpensively reach the masses, without having the luxury
of the extremely vital personalization that you describe.

Then automation has to be front and center. Because as you mentioned, most emails simply get
      deleted!

Where as any thing that is far more personal, tends to be valued. Like a hand written letter and or post card etc.

Excellent points my friend! And thanks so much for stopping by and sharing them!

  2. Well said as always Mark and it makes perfect sense even with an online business. I read a couple of months ago a comment by a fellow blogger about how she began rewarding subscribers for opening/clicking through on her emails. I thought it sounded pretty good – especially the response she got. So I’ve started rewarding subscriber behavior and gotta tell you I have been very pleasantly surprised at how quickly the “good behavior” I wanted to encourage has caught on. Now I’m working on coming up with more creative ways to provide recognition and rewards. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

    • You’re so welcome (as always!) M!

And “ethical bribery” for whatever reasons just seems to work like a charm!

It practically always seems to woo our not so ethical politicians doesn’t it?LOL!

And although I’ve yet to try your particular strategy of actually rewarding subscribers
for opening emails and for clicking on links, that is an excellent and extremely creative strategy M!

And I hope you don’t mind if I share it (and credit my source of course!), but that could be sort of like
creating a point system and the subscribers could be made totally aware of what to expect
and, as you mentioned, they would expect to be rewarded and therefore act accordingly!

Man, the more I think about your suggestion M, that could potentially be a great way to get both
your open rates and click through rate (CTR) a whole lot higher!LOL!
      Rather inexpensively!

Thanks so much for sharing such a fantastic and incredibly simple marketing concept!

Because had you not shared that one, it would definitely continued to allude me!LOL!

  3. Hey Mark,

You know what? This reminds me of when I purchased my car. I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Hyundai is always sending me these perks for oil changes, tire rotation, etc…

This is a great strategy for them since other people are paying much more for these services through their car dealership or more independent service chain companies. Each time I tell others how much I’m paying for the services I get from Hyundai, they are astonished!

So with this said, it becomes enticing for them to become a hyundai consumer. This correlate with what you’re getting across here as far as the perks. But it’s quite clever how these business owners come up with these strategies in order to build their list as well as attract more customers to their business. I definitely have to tip my hat off to them!

Great post Mark! I hope you have a great week ahead!

    • Sounds like you got and have one heck of a deal going there Sherman!LOL!

And you just re-confirmed how incredibly positive and potentially profitable, positive
word of mouth advertising truly is!

Because in most cases, whenever someone we know, like and trust, makes a recommendation and or suggestion etc.

We typically tend to follow their advice. And whenever a consumer is getting some really cool perks, they can’t
help but talk about them and let everybody they know, in on their good fortune!

So I’d definitely agree with you, that saving tons of money and getting some really cool perks on top of it!

That equals tons of free positive word of mouth advertising for the companies that provide them!LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing some of your real world experiences! And (as always) thanks for your
      continuous support too Sherman!

      It’s definitely appreciated!

  5. Hi Mark. Great tips on how to be successful at email marketing. The idea of having your best customers have exclusive offers available only to them as part of an email campaign is brilliant!

Would you include a statement to that effect in enticing people to sign up for emails?

    Thanks for your help.

lame with regards to their freebie opt in inducements!LOL!

But the bigger, more relevant and bolder the inducements, the more signups they’ll get!
      Right?

And as you mentioned, the more exclusive the better! Thanks so much for stopping by

  7. Mark,

I love your term “guruettes” for leading online female marketers. What you are talking about here is that we need to create an irresistible offer, something for free or at a “perceived” huge discount or something they think they cannot get anywhere else.
Just building a huge list does not necessarily lead to so many more sales if the open rate is not great and if the offer is not great. And some people with a rather small list have made huge sums of money from their enthusiastic subscribers.

    Warmly,

And of course you and I (and so many others) totally realize and or appreciate, that if we don’t currently
have this mystery free list building inducement just yet!

Some other extremely savvy on or offline marketer does!

And they can usually be persuaded to see how it’s totally in their (long term) best interest to
strategically partner (JV) with us, in order to get some free long term exposure to even more potential customers and
      clients!

For literally pennies on the dollar! And yes, I’m so glad you like my self “penned” term “guruettes to

  8. Hi Mark, makes you wonder how some businesses survive, if they don’t give away anything for free, to get people into the door. We have some big furniture stores who offer interest free financing for 3 years, for big items. Years ago, we purchased some expensive furniture that way – and found out how the finance companies make their money. Over the 3 years, they kept reducing the amount we automatically paid them, so once the 3 years were up, we still owed lots, and they started charging us huge interest amounts. In hindsight, we should’ve made additional voluntary amounts over the 3 years.

In fact, as with most things in life ,with regards to financing terms over time,
once you actually totally understand it and put a pencil to it.

It’s often not quite what it originally seemed!

Thanks so much for sharing your real world insights and for your continuous support!

  9. Hi Mark,

This makes perfect sense. People love getting free stuff, especially if they think that it’s exclusive.

I remember when banks used to give out free stuff, like toasters, to get people to open up an account.

I have watched people get involved in things just for the perks, even if they didn’t really need them. Folks are funny like that.
