Entrepreneur, have you ever (or) maybe a more accurate question might be, “how” many times have you found yourself caught between the proverbial rock and a hard place? Most boot strapping newbie entrepreneurs (find) especially in the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey, that’s pretty much their second (if not first) address, correct? Pretty much.
Because initially until that consistent income starts rolling in, pretty much the only things they have in extremely large quantities are, a lack of consistent results, wheel barrels full of doubt and skepticism, (from well meaning) friends and family members, correct?
They’ve got tons of ambition, passion and optimism about the future success of this venture, right? However, the immediate problem is, none of those admirable qualities can be used in practical ways to help pay the bills, right?
Not initially anyway. So here’s the thing with brand new hyper creative and extremely passionate newbie entrepreneurs in particular. More times than not, they started their vision with very little spendable cash, right?
Sure, they begged or borrowed and bartered this and that from well meaning friends and family members, and anybody else they could sell their dream to!
But my friend, in the very beginning, corporate America (meaning) one of your local major newspapers and or district or regional magazines, is not about to barter (trade) you their extremely valuable (prime time) display and or classified ad space for something else in lieu of cash!
Why on earth would they, when they’ve got literally tons of other potential vendors lined up ready to pay retail rates for the privilege to do so! But as with most things in the business world. All (thank goodness) is not lost!
So How Do Extremely Savvy Entrepreneurs Such As Yourself Consistently Create Really Big Profits From Incredibly Tiny Traditional Ad Budgets?
For this particular hypothetical marketing example, let’s say that you and or someone you know (and love) has sank their very last nickel and maxed out practically every high interest rate credit card they have, in order to try and make a go of their women’s hair salon business.
(Note: This particular industry is being used to demonstrate certain proven ninja marketing strategies, concepts and tactics, because no matter what condition your local economy may currently be in and no matter “how” much local competition there is at any given time, this is still a much needed practical service (to some degree or another) in any given area!)
So needless to say, even though there may be a few more slightly more expensive upscale places for women to get their hair done, your particular modestly priced shop (if) marketed and positioned correctly, can still go and and creatively grab and create some serious market share.
Here’s how:
First off remember, that just to open the doors, you’ve pretty much exhausted all of your available start up funds on everything you needed to be able to start serving your customers from day one! Which means, other than (perhaps) some barter arrangements as was previously mentioned and good old fashion “positive” word of mouth advertising.
Your choices for effectively utilizing a proven marketing/advertising strategy, are pretty limited. So like any serious -and severely- cash strapped dynamic entrepreneur. You opt for some good old fashion ninja marketing strategies and tactics, coupled with some good old fashion “positive” word of mouth buzz, thrown in for good measure!
So here’s one of the very first strategies that you’ll inexpensively test, in order to hopefully generate some -serious- long term positive word of mouth, on and offline local buzz.
Because remember, initially you will be hyper leveraging friends and family members, friends and acquaintances wives, girlfriends, co-workers, relatives, aunts, grandmothers, Mothers, Mother in laws, fellow female PTA members, neighborhood watch Mom members etc, to initially get bodies in the door asap!
And your (so called) warm market pool will quickly being to sort of dry up! So you’re definitely going to need that endless pool of fresh new first time customers to constantly be warming your (and the other hairdressers)seats!
That being the case, (entrepreneur) go out into the community-asap- and start aggressively (read that as) strategically targeting (rather) high profile women in various professions and certain lines of high profile jobs and or careers and other lines of work, and start offering them the proverbial “deal of the century” in order to accomplish two things asap!
1.) Major accomplishment # one: You’re looking to quickly create some high profile anchor repeat customers/clients that can and will be positive walking talking billboards for your outstanding work 24/7, and that my friends includes major holidays as well!
(And BTW, there’s no extra charge for them showing off your excellent work on major holidays!)
(More on this major holiday total gangsta ninja marketing strategy in part two BTW! So please be sure and stay tuned for that little hummer!) But I digress! Anyway…
Servicing Friends And Family Members May In Fact Help You Start Your Business But That Proven Marketing Strategy Can Not And Will Not Help You Sustain And Systematically Grow Your Business Long Term!
2.) Major accomplishment # two: By strategically implementing strategy # one, you will then creatively leverage them by consistently implementing two more brain dead simple (mega proven) marketing tactics.
A.) First, let’s say your typical retail price for the general public is $27 dollars (or X) every other week, to give these ladies that movie star hair do they so desperately crave. For these VIP anchor repeat customers/clients you will provide a special (punch card) or simply a laminated card that allows them to get the exact same star treatment every other week (or whatever) your actual schedule is, they now get the exact same star treatment for just $17 dollars each visit! (Or X!)
Which BTW, equates to a 38% savings per visit! Think that’ll get their jaws flapping around the old water cooler? And or constantly tweeting and posting on Facebook , Instagram and Pintrest etc! Happily showing off their new do and constantly bragging about “how” much they paid! Oh yea!
B.) You’ll also give them (say)10 or 15 – time sensitive- new customer only VIP gift certificates (to begin with!) to immediately pass out to their extremely close female friends, family members, associates, employees, co-workers, relatives and in laws etc!
And they can get the exact same deal for the next 90 -180 days or the next ( three to six months)! Test, test and test and track! What da ya gotta do cadets?
Now then, this initial ninja marketing surge of endless daisy chaining of your most locally influential customers, should be enough to help you (at least) keep the doors open temporarily, while you systematically go about really building your business, through powerful -on and offline- positive word of mouth business.
In part two, we’ll delve even farther into some proven -think outside the box- ways of building your business, using some low cost non conventional (ninja) marketing tactics and strategies!
In the mean time, hopefully it’s not hard to see “how” extremely savvy entrepreneurs such as yourself, can create some really big long term profits, even if you have an extremely tiny conventional advertising budget! Don’t you agree?

Hi Mark, great example you’ve given of a way to get customers inside the door. Every business does that to some extent – makes an offer that people can’t resist, then allows the customers to get to know the business and what kind of service they provide.

Mark, you have truly out done yourself!
May thoughts had to go back sometime. Yes, “word of mouth” is the best and only way that is worth something to grow and retain clients/customers.
We put a twist by sharing our gratitude for each visit. We celebrate each client’s event’s. They, say it goes along way. Not one person has destroyed our message, gift.
You may want to consider expressing your gratitude with others vs. self-promotion. Mark is an amazing person. One whom I assure can and will walk your through how to accomplish the best methods.
