Do You Really Understand How Dangerous The Number One Is To Your Small Business?

So are you a sports fan by any chance? If so, do you routinely root for a certain team, be it college or pro or both? Or are you currently married to and or involved with, and or related to anybody that’s a huge sports fan of some kind?

Because if you are, you totally understand their flat out obsession with, (either) their particular team and or their favorite superstar athlete(s), always finishing first, correct?Whether it’s preseason or not, right?

It’s almost as if, when it comes to rooting for their particular team and or superstar athlete(s), they only expect and accept one particular outcome 24/7!

And it’s the same with your small business, correct? Meaning, no matter what, you’ve got to always somehow come out on top and be number uno, correct? Well entrepreneur, while much can  be said for your fiery tenacity and laser focus and drive etc!

I gotta tell you, there are certain times and situations, as they relate to your small business, when the number one, is down right dangerous to your financial health, stability and long term business viability!Let’s have a look at an instance or two and you be the ultimate judge!

So Entrepreneur Do You Really Understand Just How Truly Dangerous The Number One Can Potentially Be To Your Cash Starved Small Business?

First of all, please don’t get me wrong here, I’m the first one to readily admit, it’s a totally rush and it does wonders for both your ego and self confidence, whenever you’re considered the “number one go to expert” in your particular industry!

Or if you’re awarded for being the “number one affiliate” in some sort affiliate marketing and sales production contest! Or if your business and or service is rated “number one” in the region for having outstanding X!Two years running no less!Fantastic and major congrats!

Are you sitting back down? Now let’s briefly discuss at least two particular instances, when the number one isn’t such a good thing and “how” given the wrong set of circumstances, your empire is virtually on the verge of collapse!

Two major instances, where the number one can be extremely dangerous to the long term well being of your cash starved small business!

How Your Small Business Can Easily Become A Victim And Casualty Of The Number One Syndrome!

1.) The first way your business can become a casualty of the number one: This first situation, (unfortunately) is all too common! See if this sounds familiar!

So through a ton of continuous hard work, laser focus and plenty of personal and professional sacrifices! (Sound familiar?) You’ve finally started to break through and gain some traction, notoriety and earning some note worthy income too!Thank goodness and it’s about time, right?

That said, you’ve even managed to attract a few rather talented and totally driven outside sales reps or an IT whiz or in house sales rep etc!

And this one particular sales rep, (who) let’s hope is not also your spouse and or significant other! Anyway, as you analysis your weekly sales stats, it’s obvious they routinely account for a staggering 80% of the sales revenue generated, sometimes more!

NASA, we have a (potential) problem a brewing! Because slowly over time, they begin to verbally acknowledge their financial contributions, and value to your organization and before long, like far too many superstar athletes, they begin to expect and demand, more and more concessions from you and your business!(Nod your head cadets, because it’s true!)

And guess what entrepreneur, you both know “if” they decide to walk and head over to one of your major competitors, at least 80% of your current and future revenues is going with them!

That’s the all too common and inherent danger of strictly and being totally reliant on (either) one superstar sales rep, one major source of income and or one major way of consistently generating targeted traffic to your mobile friendly WordPress website and or blog!

(Think Google slap!

Small Business Doesn’t Have To Mean Thinking Small!

2.) The second way your business can become a casualty of the number: As if that wasn’t bad enough! Here’s the next all too common way, that the number one, can be potentially dangerous to your small business.

As you’ve gained some much needed real world business experience! You’re learning “how to”  effectively manage people, respond to potential crisis’s and as a direct result, your confidence has grown and (slowly but surely), so has your bank account as well.

Your next major challenge is land a least one premiere account!Let’s face it, if you wanna run with the big boys & girls, you’ve be able to say you’ve got at least one or two major accounts, right? Absolutely!

So you and your team set out on a quest to land at least one major account! So you set your sites on company and or service X! And after a few hit & miss presentations! And a few power lunches and agreeing to several major cash crunching concessions, you’ve actually done it entrepreneur!

Your business/service has “finally” landed that prestigious, major ego boosting account!Congratulations!

But sadly, within 90 days to six months time, their never ending demands, always being done under the threat of pulling out and or simply not renewing when the time comes!

You’re suddenly realizing the math totally doesn’t work!Your cousin the part time CPA was dead right! “How” in the world could you have been so blind, (not to mention) desperate to close such a case draining and resource hogging account! You continually ask yourself, as yo toss and turn at night, unable to fully relax and get some much needed and well deserved sleep!

Entrepreneur, the sad fact is, because of the way you’ve systematically rearranged your business/service, in order to accommodate their never ending demands! This one prim a Donna account, now equates to a whopping 78.57% of your cash flow!

Oh boy! And if you either lose them, (through) no fault of your own! Or if they simply decide to test the waters (just to see) “what’s” the very best offer your major competitors can present.

Either way, they’re taking the vast majority of your much needed cash flow with them! Are they not? So once again, you can see just “how” potentially dangerous it is, to your cash challenged small business, for a single account,(no matter how glamorous it may be), for them to be your number one source of current and potential future income, agreed? Any questions?

  1. Hi Mark,

It’s actually scary to have just one source of income or traffic because if anything happens to it, that’s it.

Thanks for re-emphasizing this point with your post.

    Cheers.

  3. Hi Mark,

You came to my blog post, so I thought I would return the favor. So your topic is “Do You Really Understand How Dangerous The Number One Is To Your Small Business”. There is an old saying that goes like this do not put all your eggs in one basket. This is a great article and one that must not be ignored.

It sounds like you need smaller accounts too in the process of landing a client who uses up all your time and is responsible for most of your cash flow. You need some bread and butter to fill in the gaps.

This is a tough position to be in and yes it is extremely dangerous. How the heck do you manage all the stress that goes hand in hand with this type of business?

You need to listen to Les Brown or Tony Robbins once a day and do some meditation and affirmations. Something to help you manage the stress and I say this because I really do care about what you’re going through.

Thank you for sharing, Mark and you have a wonderful day and week ahead!
