So What Does The Caterpillar To Butterfly Evolution Have To Do With Making Money?

Have you ever noticed or wondered (out loud) how the caterpillar to butterfly evolution, actually serves as a proven step by step blueprint, for systematically increasing your sales? Of course at first glance it probably sounds or seems like a bit of a stretch.

But it’s really not quite as far fetched as you may initially think. In fact, upon closer examination, the entire caterpillar to butterfly evolution, really serves as a proven road map to more sales.

How you ask rather skeptically? Well, let’s take a closer look at the caterpillars slow walk metamorphosis for the answers. And then compare it to what typically happens in your sales process and see what the comparisons reveals.

It really is amazing how much nature can teach you/us about the real world. Especially as it relates to business. Let’s have a closer look..

So How Does The Caterpillar To Butterfly Evolution Process Help You Grow Your Business?

Well, to start it all has to do with the ninth word in the aforementioned headline (process), because you see, you, me or your prospect doesn’t exactly go from one extreme to another, just like that! Do we? Case in point: if your door bell rings right now and you answer it and there’s a well dressed man or woman standing there, that you’ve never seen before.

In other words, a complete stranger is at your door and they’re trying to sell you some rather elaborate widget, that cost just, you fill in the blank! Honestly, on a scale of one to ten. What are the odds of you buying it right on the spot? Exactly!

On the other hand, let’s suppose they offer you a really cool free ethical bribe of some kind, valued at X. In exchange for just 30- 45 minutes of your extremely valuable time.

And even if you don’t buy anything right then and there, they’ve got your contact information and you both agree that they’ll periodically check in (strategically follow up) with you with going forward.

Would or could you call that a process? Bingo. So now, let’s take a look at the lowly caterpillar. Does the caterpillar simply go to sleep on Monday & wake up on Tuesday, a full fledged butterfly? Nope. Instead, they first go from a lowly caterpillar, then they evolve into a cocoon, right?

Then from the cocoon, they first (typically) shed their skin at least four times! Can you believe that? Then they finally emerge as one of natures most awesome creations, that being  a full blown butterfly!

Isn’t It Amazing How Much The Long Term Sales Process Is A Lot Like The Caterpillar To Butterfly Evolution!

Now let’s take a really closer look at you entire successful sales process.  First of all, there’s your all important brand new first time customer or client. They don’t start out as a brand new first time customer or client, do they? Not at all.

They first start out as a complete stranger, right? Then, once they join your on or offline database (your list), they now have become a semi qualified potential prospect, agreed? Well, to this point in the evolutionary process, they’re in the cocoon so to speak. Because even though they’re further along in the process than a complete stranger (or the initial caterpillar ) stage.

They haven’t actually bought anything yet. But they’re evolving are they not? And finally, they make that (all important) very first purchase of some kind! Finally, they’ve fully evolved into a first time customer or client.

Now here’s the $64,000 dollar question. From the very first time your prospect comes in contact or is introduced to your business, product or service, did they or do they instantly become a first time customer or contact? Probably not right? So just like the delicate balance act of the caterpillar to butterfly process.

It takes time to go from initial potential prospect to first time customer or client, does it not? So (overall) the two processes really aren’t all that different, are they? Your thoughts.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your unique approach of describing the conversion process, Mark. I’d not considered it this way before but it’s so accurate.

We must have patience and be consistent in following the process of nurturing people to achieve results.

It doesn’t stop at the metamorphosis stage though does it? Once your butterfly has found its wings you must take care to protect it from all the dangers around to prolong its life.

    • So true Sue!

look at that, you just gave me a really neat idea for (if nothing else) a really nice
follow up blog post and how to video or two! Thanks!

And thanks for sharing your extremely keen insights and for you continuous support! I totally
      appreciate both!

  2. Hi Mark,

I love your brilliant analogy of the caterpillar turning into a butterfly and how it is just like marketing!

What a great way to explain it to people, especially those who want instant success, which we know is not the way things go!

As marketers, people need to be exposed to us at least three times until they will pay attention to what we have to offer.

Ahh..the mailing list! This is how we start to engage with them, making things a little easy for our potential customer to know us, get to like us and even trust us!

Suddenly our wings are spread, they see the beauty of what we can offer and together we can fly.

This is such a fantastic way to get the message across to marketers. I thank you for doing this!

    • Thank you so much Donna!

I like the way you just used an analogy about after our subscribers join our list and we start to
strategically follow up, that in essence is our wings starting to spread! In the right way!

That’s awesome! I wish I came up with of that!LOL!

You know, one of the absolute worse things a new inexperienced green as grass newbie can make is to believe or con themselves into
somehow believing they can emulate the success of their mentors in record time!

It ain’t gonna happen! But like you say, you just have to learn how the entire process works and then
slowly start applying the proven fundamentals that your coaches and mentors lay out!

And over time, you’ll start to consistently see results! Case i point! Before I met and started diligently applying what
I’ve learned from you and David, my blog was a certified ghost town!LOL!

But thanks t you two and Adrienne Smith, that’s all changed! Thanks for stopping by and for continuous support coach!

      I truly appreciate it!

  3. That’s a very interesting analogy, Mark. Too often, we expect contacts to go from prospects to customers immediately. I’ve heard it takes, on average, 7 contacts before a prospect becomes a customer – you article brings this out clearly.

    Thanks

Especially people that previously have had no real world business experience of any kind. They are completely
unaware of exactly what’s involved in terms investing the proper amount of time and effort into the entire sales completion process.

You mentioned that figure of on average, at least seven strategic follow ups, before a sale typically takes place.

However, we both know that figure really only applies to the top 20% of the best sales/entrepreneurial professionals!

The other remaining 80% will typically give up and move on after only one or two actual follow ups!

Or they mistakenly believe, that a brochure or a static old school website of some kind or an online presentation will somehow miraculously do
the actual selling for them! Good luck with that!LOL!

Thanks so much for your continuous support and for sharing your keen insights!
      I truly appreciate both!

  4. Mark,
wow, you sure went deep to help us all understand what processes are required to succeed in business.. no matter what type of business…

It show that you know what you are doing and practice all this process day after day as you go on your business..

Your video presentation is very easy to follow and understand and helps immensely to grasp the importance of follow the process.. You emphasise the Caterpillar To Butterfly Evolution a lot… but I must say that the best example that I relate much better is the example of someone meeting a person for the first time and after 45 minutes expect to marry him or her ahha 🙂

Thanks so much for your great effort to save us years of errors.. by following a simple proven process and succeed.

  5. I love this analogy Mark. In fact my favorite quotation fits perfectly. “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~Maya Angelou

Thanks for the great advice and inspiration!
