Brand Management: So What's The Connection Between Two Day Old Pizza And Yours?

Brand Management: So What’s The Connection Between Two Day Old Pizza And Yours?

So entrepreneur, “honestly” how much time, effort, consideration and or thought,  did you really put into your current branding efforts? Especially your all  important brand management strategies and or tactics etc.

(These things are important you know! 😎 ) Because obviously being (either) a solo-  and or entrepreneur in general, you probably don’t have an entire separate  department within your company, strictly designated for dealing with such matters, do   you?

I mean, when it comes to stuff like, brand communications, creative  positioning, (whatever that en tales?), and let us not forget the (all important role of)  internal branding strategies etc.

It’s stuff like that BTW, which causes far too many otherwise extremely dedicated  entrepreneurs to develop ulcers!(That and spending way too many wasteful (non productive) hours on social media! 😎 )

It’s enough to make your head spin, right? 😎 However, when problems and or temporary hiccups occur in your business, and if they haven’t yet, (rest assured) they most certainly will!

“What” type of brand management damage control strategies and or tactics, do you currently have (either)  in place and or (at least) on the drawing board, and ready to be implemented in a moments notice?

And hopefully it’s not something and or a process that has to pass through a bares bones minimum of five or six layers of committees, right? 😎 That’s a relief!

In fact, let’s just say that you just currently have your standard run of the mill (mobile responsive) WordPress blog and you’re going about your business. What in the world (and or), what is the connection between two day old pizza being served in a local pizza shop and your all important brand management efforts?

So What In The World Does Two Day Old Pizza Have To Do With Your Company’s Brand Management?

First of all, just to set the record straight; no legitimate business owner would ever try and serve two day old pizza to their valued customer base!

That example is being used, merely to form the appropriate image in your mind. That said, consider this (potentially) frightening scenario for just a second.

You walk into a local pizza shop, and it quickly becomes obvious that the pizza being served is at least two days old!Okay!

“What” pray tell do you do?You got that right! Now then cadets, picture this all too common online scenario. A first time  visitor arrives at your state of the art WordPress blog. (And hopefully it wasn’t some sort of paid advertising campaign that initially got them there!)

Only to discover (much to their dismay), you (for whatever reasons) haven’t published any fresh (new) content to your site, for the last two weeks or more!(NASA we have a problem!)

Hey entrepreneur, before you start with 101 totally legitimate reasons “why” you haven’t posted any fresh, unique “how to” problem solving content to your blog.

Don’t Brand Yourself As The Business Owner That’s Always Late Or The Blogger That’s Just Recreational!

I totally get it! You had relatives (on your spouse and or significant other’s side) unexpectedly come in from out of town! And they’ve ended up staying a little longer than you were originally told and or expected!

And this week was your turn to both take and pick up the kids from soccer practice! And this morning when the dog unexpected got out  and made a b-line towards your neighbors “award winning flower bed,”that caused a few heated exchanges between the two of you!

And then there’s that parent teacher conference thingy, you’ve put off the last two times it was scheduled! And of course you promised your spouse and or significant other, that one night this week you would accompany them to their best friends grand opening for their (you fill in the blank!)

Hey, you’re extremely busy! I totally get it! But entrepreneur guess “what?” You’re all important first time and or returning visitors doesn’t!

And “what’s” even more important, they could care less! They’ll simply head else where for their immediate educational needs! So when it comes to your all  important brand management efforts, you really need to think long and hard about “how” you want to be perceived in the market place.

Do you want to be viewed like the popular local corner store owner, who sold out to a much younger relative that opens practically every Saturday & Sunday morning (somewhere) between  7:50 and 8 am, even though their semi faded sign on the front door says their store hours are 7:30 am to 11 pm!

Effective And Memorable Branding Isn’t Just What Your Logo Or Tagline Says…

Because (believe it or not), that’s all part of your branding as well!Don’t get behind the perception eight ball!

Because once you do, entrepreneur it’s awfully hard to play perception brand management catch up!In fact (getting back) to our original scenario!

If you walked into a local pizza/burger place like I did (a while back) and saw a rather well fed (looking) roach crawling over the clearly stale looking pizza! “How” often are you coming back?Exactly!

(Newsflash: The last time I passed by, I noticed the place has since been shutdown!Thank goodness! 😎 )

Translated, once you get perceived as the (occasional/recreational (hobby) type of inconsistent blogger, that rarely if ever consistently posts fresh problem solving  content to their blog! Guess what? Both Google and your visitors will start to ignore your site altogether!

Now you’re officially in brand management perception rebuilding hell!Good luck! It’s just best not to go there to begin with!Don’t you agree? Good!

Now as is customary during this part of our show.

  2. I don’t have a logo, and I’m just beginning to build my brand as a writer. But I see the value in blogging at least once a week! Consistency is one of my weaknesses, and that’s why I decided to join Sarah Arrow’s 30 Day Blogging Challenge. Today is Day 26, and I have managed to post once a day every day — a big step for me! I’m not going to continue blogging every day, but I certainly intend to post once, twice, or three times a week. Besides, it’s easy for me to slip into “writer’s block” mode, and it’s so important for me to write whether I feel like it or not.

It’s always great to come to your blog, Mark, because you post so often and there’s always something I can comment on. 🙂

    • Big congrats on your progress so far Willena!

That’s a heck of a commitment to stick to!

Now that you know you can do it, writing consistently once or twice a week will
      a breeze for you!LOL!

And really, just between you and me, there is no (so called) writer’s block!

It’s just sometimes we talk ourselves out of sharing the content we have inside us!

We convince ourselves that what we have to share is somehow not worthy or good enough!LOL!
      But rest assured, i is!LOL!

  3. This is such an important message Mark and I will admit a real hot button for me. I’ve belonged to several blogger groups in the past and it never ceased to amaze me how many people set up a blog, join one of these groups to help spread the word about their website and then only very rarely publish new content. And yes, branding isn’t just about a tagline, in truth everything we do and say online contributes to our branding. This is a very hard lesson for some people to learn, but all the bits and pieces combine to form an impression and it’s up to us how clear that impression is and whether or not it conveys our mission. Great post as always!

    • M that is most definitely the truth!

Too many of us “think” our branding starts and stops with either
some fancy logo and or cutesy (non specific) tagline!LOL!

And worst yet like you said, I’ve even seen some newbies that are so
desperate for traffic, they’ve actually used paid methods, to drive rather expensive eyeballs
to sites which haven’t had updated content in practically a month!LOL!

What the heck for? And worst yet, they don’ have any type of lead magnet offer
      setup!LOL!

And you can guess what tends t happen after 90 – 150 days of this!LOL!

Bye, bye Internet marketing dream and hello next surefire big thing!LOL!

Thanks as always M for shedding some real world insights an good old common sense
      to the mix!LOL!

      Much appreciated!
