What are the odds

So What Are The Odds Of This Sort Of Thing Actually Happening?

Remember (way back when!) a virtually unknown and seemingly incredible long shot (at best!) challenger for the heavy weight championship in boxing.  Courageously stepped into the ring to challenge the seemingly unbeatable “Iron” Mike Tyson. (February 11, 1990 to be exact.)

And what the vast majority of boxing critics believed was “Iron” Mike was at that point in his illustrious career, pretty much invincible. In fact the night of the event in Tokyo Japan. Odd makers in Vegas laughingly had it at 42 to 1 in favor of “Iron” Mike. (How could they not?)

So what are the odds of such a long shot actually not only beating Tyson. (When many considered him (to be that point!) in his career unbeatable.) But knocking him out to become the new heavyweight champ.

Sure if you like a really feel good Hollywood fairy tale type of movie. Flush with a true struggling underdog finally over comes feel to it. You might have for at least a half of a Nano second allowed yourself to buy into such a feel good fantasy coming true.

But guess what? That’s exactly what happened that night? The he clearly has no chance whatsoever, lowly challenger James “Buster” Douglas shocked the entire boxing world to it’s knees and them some. Going forward. Let’s explore some other incredible odd beaters, shall we?

Consistently Creating Opportunity Is One thing! (And Pure Luck Is Definitely Something Else!)

At least some (if not!) most of you recognize icon and mega best selling author of “Mentor To Millions” Kevin Harrington, right? And his impressive entrepreneurial resume also includes being a former original cast member of ABC’s runaway hit TV series “Shark Tank.”

Kevin left the show permanently just after season two. And to date he’s not only credited with generating a staggering 5 billion dollars in gross revenue worldwide.

But he’s also credited with (to date) helping at least 20 different companies reach or surpass 100 million dollars in front or back end  total gross revenue. (You go cat.)

Not bad for a guy who dropped out of college during his junior year. Only because by then he was already successfully running a local company grossing several million dollars per year. (And he was nowhere near the iconic world recognized brand he is today.)

What are the odds

Entrepreneur Let’s Talk About Some More Incredible Odd Beaters!

As mentioned previously. ABC’s mega hit TV show “Shark Tank”, as you can well imagine every year generates a ton of potential applicants eagerly applying to be on the show. At last count about 50,000 do so on an annual basis.

But here’s the really sad news. (Entrepreneur are you currently sitting down?)  Because typically out of those 50,000 applicants. Only a measly 350 or so actually get the chance to “pitch” their idea to the sharks (aka) cast members.

(And to put those dismal numbers into the proper context. It works out to just a paltry seven tenths of one percent. So less than one percent of the 50,000 or so annual applicants actually get invited onto the mega hit TV show each year.)

By comparison, only two percent of the highest achieving high school students who apply each year gets accepted into Harvard. So your odds are actually better to be accepted into Harvard. Than they currently are for being chosen to be a guest on “Shark Tank.” (Pretty mind blowing, is it not?)

Some of you already know after Kevin left the show. He went on to continue to license and partner with other mega “brand named” entrepreneurs. Who themselves along with Kevin and his expert team. Have literally earned tens, if not hundreds of millions of dollars.

But Kevin and his best selling author and co- podcast host partner Seth Greene. Now host an outrageously popular podcast called “Sharkpreneur.” (A nice little takeoff from the hit TV series, correct?

What are the odds

So What Are The Odds Of This Sort Of Thing Actually Happening?

The odds are pretty darn good. On a daily, weekly and monthly basis. They receive a ton of aspiring entrepreneurs who desperately want to be a guest on their show, right?

And remember. Kevin literally has direct or indirect access to all types of mega successful entrepreneurs all over the world. On top of all the global influential contacts and various successful partnerships as well as successful Venture Capitalist relationships he and his professional team have cultivated in America as well.

So both he and Seth aren’t suffering from a lack qualified guests to be on the show. In fact think of “what” type of daily volume of all kinds their professional screeners must face to no end.

Emails, (a ton of spam, right?) Unsolicited text messages and endless phone calls etc. Mountains of unsolicited direct snail mail. Text messages being sent to any and every number which the sender(s) think are somehow connected to Kevin or Seth or their closest staff members.

So How Would You Explain The Following?

How in the heck does or would a relatively unknown direct response marketing strategist. Send a single email. After receiving the “Shsrkpreneur” podcast as a possible match.

On the free version of podmatch.com. (You can even join the free version of the service via my affiliate link if you’d like.)

(And just in case you’re not currently familiar with the owner of the service Alex Sanfillipo. It basically operates like a dating service for both potential podcast guest, (like me or you.) And potential podcast host who also want to be guest on other relative podcast.

Anyway. Their software periodically sends you and I (meaning the members of the free or more robust paid service.) Potential matches based on the criterion you/we provide and your/our keywords etc.

And as fate would have it. On one particular day. The “Sharkpreneur” podcast shows up as one of my four potential matches for this particular batch.

So strictly for laughs. Going in knowing the beyond incredible odds of me being invited on the show. Out of the sea of others vying for these extremely exclusive and limited slots. Are extremely low. (Which is definitely putting it mildly.)

So I wrote them a non traditional type of email. And you can read “how” things ultimately turned out on the Linkedin post I created. (See the image below.)

And So The Great Debate Continues!

Was it simply 99.99% blind luck which caused the opportunity stars to temporarily line up in my favor? More than likely probably. And just like in the case of 42 to one underdog James “Buster” Douglas’s totally unexpected upset of the once seemingly unbeatable “Iron” Mike Tyson.

Did Douglas simply fight the “fight” of his life? (He sure did.) And did Tyson’s own arrogance and over confidence contribute (in some prominant way!) to his humiliating first defeat of his eventual hall of fame boxing career? (I’d say so.)

But still in all. It happens and will continue to happen. Sure I could play to my ego and suggest my non conventional email  message to them was the key.

But the odds are pretty darn good my next 50 or more non conventional email messages to the top 50 podcasts in my particular niche. Asking “pitching” to be on their show will probably be soundly rejected.

So what are the odds of this sort of thing consistently happening? You can share your much anticipated thoughts below. (And who knows. By the time you’re actually reading this particular blog post.
