Or they directly responded to some type direct marketing piece of some kind.

Three Critical Elements For Selecting Direct Response Lists That You Didn’t Personally Develop Yourself!
Remember first and foremost, whenever possible you want to develop your very own in house list! Of course you realize there is no “holy grail” of direct response marketing list criteria, that can guarantee the success of your direct mail campaign, right? But closely following the following three guidelines, will greatly put the odds of success in your favor!
1.) Critical element # one:”Recency” Seriously consider purchasing a direct response list, where the purchasers have bought something within the last seven weeks or less. Because obviously the warmer your list is, the better your chances of having a profitable mailing.
2.) Critical element # two: “Product similarity” Whenever possible, be sure you try and match your product or service as closely as possible to the potential list of buyers! This is critical.
3.) Critical element # three:”Price point similarity” If the purchasers on the list just bought a lower priced product or service similar to yours, but they only spent $37 dollars and your initial low priced product or service is $497 dollars, my friend, this is not “price point similarity.”
Three More Proven Direct Mail Marketing Tips You Should Probably Be Applying To Direct Mail Marketing Campaigns!

Proven direct mail marketing tip # one: If you decide to work with a list broker (the ones that rent you the list), just be sure you ask for (or at least) inquire about (what’s often referred to as) the “continuation report” this report typically list the names of whose rented the list within the last six months or so, and who continues to rent it!
Because obviously, if they’ve bothered to rent the same list multiple times, the list may be fairly responsive!
2.) Proven direct mail marketing tip # two: Again, this next tip only applies if you’re working with a list broker of some kind. Be sure you ask the broker for a “data card.” This information typically detail how the list was originally compiled, the number of people on the list and who the primary list owner is etc.
3.) Proven direct mail marketing tip # three: always, always ask your broker to see a sample (of some kind) of the original mail piece that got the people on the list to respond. This way you have a much clearer idea of what they originally responded to.
