Three Ways Technology Has Actually Taken Your Small Business Hostage!

Ladies & gentlemen, is there anything sadder than, a sincere entrepreneur that has dove in head first and truly embraces the technological side of their business.

Only to literally find themselves drowning in it, (and because of it), simply because they (nor) the person(s) the fast talking IT consultant(s) (supposedly) trained, honestly have little or  no clue what they’re doing either!

If to this point in, (either) your very own personal journey and or your employment  journey, your small business or where you currently work, has yet to experience  this!

Congratulations! But entrepreneur, be forewarned, because just as the sun rises and  then sets each and every day, it’s surely just a matter of time!

Because no one can deny that successfully running (and) effectively managing the hectic day to day operations of your dream small business definitely involves more than it’s fair share of technological issues, right?

But word to the wise, unless you or somebody is really up to stuff, with regards to the various technological aspects of your business!

Entrepreneur, you’re (more than likely) going to whined up being held or taken hostage by it! In fact, see if the following three, all too real and all too  common situations sound familiar!

So What Are The Three Most Common Ways Your Small Business Is Being Held Hostage By Technology?

Face it already entrepreneur, you and I, (especially me) did not pursue starting and trying to strategically grow our dream small business, because we had an affinity for talking about things like logistics, key codes, data breaches, networks, spyware, data backups, ransomware or virus’s etc.Agreed?

All subject’s I’m sure you can’t wait to impress friends & family with your intricate knowledge about, correct? Unless of course, it’s how you primarily keep a roof over your head!

But as you start digging deeper into the ever expanding technology maze, it get’s downright scary! You know why? Because at some point, it really starts to dawn on, (both) you and your in house employee(s) in charge of this particular aspect of your business.

If anything major were to occur, you basically have little or no understanding of what to do about it and or “how to” correct it, without your friendly neighborhood IT professionals help!Ouch!

So let’s briefly take a look at three incredibly simple ways, that today’s modern technology, has the potential of holding your dream small business hostage!

Does Your Lack Of Understanding Modern Technology Stand In The way Of Your Business Or Service Moving Ahead!

1.) The first way: Like it or not, but not consistently updating your antiquated technology, is definitely holding your business and your long term potential profits hostage. How you ask?

Entrepreneur, if it still hasn’t occurred to you how much potential money your non mobile friendly WordPress website and or blog is costing you! Then it’s obvious, you have completely missed the boat here!

Because at least 30% or more of your daily traffic is coming from some type of hand held device. And if those visitors have to be bothered scrolling left and right, just to view your entire screen!

They’re headed to your competitors mobile friendly site asap!So you’ve lost them, (not only) as a potential long term repeat customer/client, but they won’t be referring your business, products and or services, (for years and years to come!)

Nor will they be positively lighting up the social media platforms singing your businesses praises as well!(You can do math on that!)

Try Not To Make Your Small Business Too Dependent On Any One Customer And Or Technology In General!

2.) The second way: Ladies & gentlemen, when you or someone inside the IT department, makes a major mistake and some sort of preventable virus negatively infects your entire computer network.

Guess what? You don’t just pay a ton to have outside IT help come in and hopefully have the problem(s) resolved within a few hours and or a day or two at the most.

You’re still on the hook for all of your employees salaries and or hourly wages, during this lull, are you not?Plus, if you’re not able to process any business online as this ongoing issue is being resolved.Wanna try and calculate what that may or may not be worth!

And once the crisis is finally resolved, your employee/associates have to play catch up, to try and just get back to where they were, before the incident occurred!Care to try and put a dollar sign on that entire situation?

3.) The third way: If the current in house people in charge of your IT department, suddenly decide to head off into the sunset, or worse yet, head over to one of you major competitors.

Are You Sick And Tired Of Being Held Hostage By Modern Technology?

Or if they finally decide to bite the bullet and head out on their own.Can you access any of the necessary files that you will most definitely need to?

If not, once again ladies & gentlemen, modern technology has temporarily taken your dream small business hostage! And the real question is, what are you going to do about it?Not a very pleasant thought, now is it?Any questions?

  2. Hi Mark,

Great stuff here. You absolutely need to make sure your technology is up-to-date because if it is not you will lose money! Mentioning that your site needs to be mobile friendly is spot on as more and more people are using their Iphone or other device to view your website.

As you mentioned you need to be aware not only of the costs involved of keeping up-to-date on your technology, but the overhead involved of your employees, especially if you’re temporarily out of business until your issues are fixed.

You need to spend money to make money. That includes keeping your technology up-to-date.

    Great post Mark.

I’ll be sharing on Twitter and Google+

And it’s these seemingly smaller ongoing costs, that as you expertly pointed out in one of
your awesome post, these tiny recurring cost, slowly add up!

And let me tell you, I’m gonna start living at your blog!LOL!Because you’ve really got an incredibly
graphic way of illustrating some powerful, must know and understand, business principles and
      concepts!

If you ever decide to take up and then teach strategic stock market investing and long term wealth building
      financial strategies etc!

You’d be a natural and your courses and live offline events would instantly and consistently sell out!LOL!

Seriously Kurt, you ought to be doing paid webinars man!I kid you not!!LOL!

  3. Hi, Mark,

What an interesting title, I just had to check it out. I agree with Doreen’s comment, and think that we must be willing to embrace technology as things advance in this digital age we’re living in. I do outsource some things as well because I want to be the entrepreneur and visionary, not the tech manager…

I got my first computer in 1992, loved learning all of the necessary skills needed in order to navigate email, the very new Internet, and bulletin boards… I haven’t looked back, so I do rather enjoy it. 🙂

I like your point about not becoming too dependent on one customer or one technology in general. I think you’re spot on. This is the reason that I choose to have the business model that includes recurring monthly payment – coaching membership so that I am not dependent on one person paying me each month, yet many do so…

Thanks for the good food for thought, I will be sharing this out.

    Have a lovely weekend.

And I couldn’t agree more with your spot on assessment! And if I don’t sound too
over the top here, but if my headline was enticing and intriguing enough, even for
an experienced expert such as yourself, I’ll gladly take that as a compliment!LOL!

But seriously, your excellent point about the true freedom having a recurring monthly
income clearly provides vs being solely dependent on say, having to sell your one ebook/ course each month
      to different individuals.

And unlike you, I’ve got to outsource anything techie, that’s slightly beyond the basics!LOL!

Because I simply have no clue! And we both recognize the Internet and therefore Internet
marketing, along with social media, is always constantly evolving!

So it’s best I let the pros handle where their best suited and I’ll gladly do likewise!LOL!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable thoughts! They are always welcome
      and so greatly appreciated!

  4. Hi Mark. As entrepreneurs with websites, we have no choice but to embrace technology to a large degree. I’m constantly learning more about technology, but I have the brains to outsource the management of my online presence to a web manager who is far more knowlegdeable than I, and guides me thru the tech jungle.

  5. Great points,Mark. The fact is that technology has gotten way ahead of consumers ability to manage it. I recently moved and I’m still trying to get everything to work properly. The telephone customer service agents are poorly trained and give bad advice. Technicians don’t keep their appointments. We are really stuck now-a-days unless we’re married to an IT consultant!

    • Thanks for some great content ideas for some additional posts Jeannette!LOL!

While I certainly don’t wish or mean to make light of what you’re sharing.

But the fact of the matter is,unfortunately, what you’re sharing is so true!

The IT industry is so full of itself these days, simply because there’s
some much demand for their services!

You get bet if or when times get leaner, they’ll be far more receptive
      to consumers!

They kinda remind me of the gurus, they’re so arrogant!Meaning the techs!

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment!
