Sugar Ray actually lost (say what!) an amateur bought in 1972, while he was a featherweight  fighting in the quarterfinal round of the National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) tournament .

Then in 1974 (even as his amateur career) was gaining serious momentum, he suffered his final two loses as an amateur. But as fate would have it, later on that same year, he also won the National Golden Gloves tournament (yea, that’s kinda of a really big deal!)  And then he also won the National AAU light welterweight championship!

Then (finally) two years later, Sugar Ray won the gold metal in the light welterweight (aka) super lightweight division. Ah yes, this is the fight that actually put him on the world stage!

He finished his remarkable amateur career with a grand total of 145 wins,  against just five losses and 75 victories by knockout. And his professional (hall of fame  boxing career) would end with a grand total of 36 victories, against just 3 losses, (some would dispute that!) And one controversial draw. (A draw means a tie-for those of you not totally familiar with the boxing lingo.)

No major endorsements would be initially forth coming! Ah yes, the real world! And on top of that, to add insult to injury! His father was hospitalized with meningitis and his beloved mother suffered a heart attack!
