Seven Little Known Facts You May Not Know About Your Target Market!

Seven Little Known Facts You May Not Know About Your Target Market!

So you’ve pretty much studied the buying habits of your target market right? And for the most part you know fairly well who they are and where they hangout online in terms of social media, correct?

In other words, you know (pretty much) if they’re on twitter, Facebook and or LinkedIn most of the time right?

That’s really good, because obviously the more you  ( and I) know and understand about the who, how, what and why factors as it relates to your particular target market, the deeper your level of understanding will aid you in better serving them. Agreed?

Because as theirs needs evolve (and they surely will), you’ll be in a better overall position to address those changing needs and provide the most accurate and comprehensive solutions.

And that ability to (not only) meet their current needs, but surpass their expectations in terms of first rate (go the extra mile customer service), that’s an incredibly powerful (not to mention), terribly inexpensive marketing tool to have at your disposal. Don’t you agree?

However, with that said; even with all of your -hopefully- state of the art customer/clients analysis etc. There are still at least seven incredibly important and probably little known facts (and or factors) about your target market that you may not currently know (and or) be aware of.

In which case, your current marketing messages and efforts may not be effectively addressing the current financial situation and or true financial reality of your target audience.

So What Are These Seven Little Known Facts About Your Target Market That You Definitely Need To Know?

(Because Ignoring Them And Or Being Totally Unaware Of Them Only Makes Effective Marketing Far More Difficult!)

First of all, the stats that you’re about to be exposed to (only) apply to the (US), and they are semi up to date. Meaning: it’s not necessary for you to email me and or leave a rather forceful comment indicating, that any one particular stat is actually higher or lower etc.

Because the fact of the matter is, the actual numbers are not what’s (really) important! Huh?

It’s the overall concepts that are being conveyed, it’s just that they are being conveyed through the use of these stats. (Which do in fact change from time to time!)

That said; (entrepreneur), you may or may not be aware the (so called) middle class (your/our) primary target market is currently under both tremendous financial and emotional siege!

Because they are stressed out to the max like never before! Sure (outwardly) they may appear to have things under control, but the actual truth is far different! For example, take a look at these seven little know, yet incredibly eye opening stats about them!

Let These Not So Obvious Facts Be Your Gateway To Some Long Term Profit Generating Potential!

And then you decide if your/our future marketing efforts shouldn’t (in some way) reflect these all too real, painful financial and or emotional realities.

1.) Little known consumer reality # one: According to the most recent stats, the current (so called) middle class (our primary target audience), their credit card debt is at an all time high!

And the sad news is, it’s steadily growing!Right now it’s just north of $9,200 dollars per average income earning household! They use their plastic for practically everything!

2.) Little known consumer reality # two: And guess what else? They are frantic because they have no idea ‘how” they’re going to pay the average cost (which is currently)  just north of $12,000 dollars, per year for per student to attend a decent in state public college!

Let alone pay for more than one kid, especially if they don’t currently qualify for any significant amount of financial aid.

3.) Little known consumer reality # three: Their real median household income since as far back as 2000, has declined by an additional three percent.

Which doesn’t sound like much, until you factor in the steady yearly increases in general property taxes, gasoline, heating cost, food cost, rent, clothing, car repairs and general maintenance, annual college tuition, food, entertainment, healthcare costs etc.

Now imagine all this happening, while  simultaneously, your annual income is slowly shrinking, and you have no idea how to stop and or prevent it from happening over and over!

Your Target Market Is Currently Emotionally And Financially Stretched And Stressed Beyond Belief!

4.) Little known consumer reality # four: And as if they don’t have enough to worry about, the annual cost at a private university (and we’re not talking the super elite schools either), well they’re looking at somewhere just north of $30,000 per year, per student!

Really? Even though their real median household disposable income has steadily been declining over the last dozen years or so! And remember, they’re no the most financially literate  to begin with!

They much prefer to invest $200 per month (or more!) on a fancy cell phone plan, as opposed to steadily investing a mere $50 dollars per month in diversified mutual fund that’s been averaging at least 9% over the last thirty plus years!

What’s up with that?

5.) Little known consumer reality # five: And get this, a staggering 83% of them that were surveyed,  readily admitted that after paying their (current) monthly bills, guess what? They simply don’t have much disposable income left!

Guess that would explain why credit card use is at an all time high, right? Eighteen percent interest rates anyone?

6.) Little known consumer reality # six: Here’a real eye opener for you/us! Sixty six percent (readily admit) they leave from paycheck to paycheck!

And that type of financial game plan also explains why there’s so much tension in marriages!

7.) Little known consumer reality # seven: And finally, (again) according to recent stats, 47% of those surveyed, confessed that no matter how hard they currently work, they just cannot seem to get ahead!

All told, these seven little known, but hopefully eye opening facts and or recent stats,  just might (at least) partially explain how and why the traditional approaches to your /our target market might be falling on deaf ears, right?

That said, can you really afford to market to them with the same business as usual attitude? Didn’t think so!

(Hey, these were just some final thoughts for you to ponder as you head into the new year! An hopefully head in armed with the right overall marketing game plan!)

  1. Wow, those are impressive statistics, Mark. That makes for a HUGE market for those of those intent on helping other people make money online.

The biggest issue, I think, is fear. People who are already in debt and are facing the task of sending their kids to college are afraid to risk any more. I think that overcoming that fear is one of our biggest tasks and objectives.

    Thanks for an illuminating post.

    All the best,
    Leslie

    • You’re so welcome Leslie!

And you make a really good point that I hadn’t even considered
      in the mix!

People aren’t exactly going to be willing to dive in with both feet if
they’re already facing a mountain of ever growing debt and an extremely
shaky and rapidly shrinking traditional job market!

Great point and thanks so much for sharing that!
