Online marketing:Why Local Businesses And Service Providers Definitely Need Email Marketing!

Do you ever feel like you’re fighting a constant uphill battle, whenever you hear about some online marketing guru/expert touting (not bragging mind you) about “how”  their particular system and or strategy or lead capture page thingy, averages some  outrageously high opt in rates, the type of super human results that makes the rest of us feel like mere mortal failures!

Have you ever had that feeling as you read about their latest online exploits?I’m mean, you  and I consistently average somewhere under 35%,correct? Yet here’s some respected guru and or guruette, saying that one particular ad and or opt in email campaign of  theirs, produced a staggering 67.49%!

Of course (rarely) will they ever elaborate on the fact, it took them upwards of $50,000   big ones, constantly testing and tweaking those ads and or capture pages, before they  came across those winners, right? Exactly!

Or they didn’t test and track too much and their ads fizzled out completely! This post is designed to deal with those non guru like local offline small business owners and or service providers, that simply want to use automation (of some kind) to move their businesses forward!

Why Serious Offline Local Business Owners Definitely Need To Harness The Power Of Online Marketing Marketing Opportunities!

(Primarily Through The Use Of Email Marketing!)

First of all, let’s deal with the all too common reality that the average small business owner and or service provider, is not a marketing guru and or top flight copy writer, correct?

Which means, they won’t be writing email marketing follow up messages that are overly sales y!Or written by hired gun copy writers!Instead, they’ll use (either) strategic mobile marketing and or email marketing to consistently keep in contact with their subscribers.

Let’s take a hypothetical example and play with some (hopefully) realistic type of numbers. Strictly for illustration purposes only.First, let’s say a local bakery wants to lower some of typical their upfront out of pocket cost, by strategically using email and or mobile marketing.

Instead of using pricey, hit & miss snail mail post cards and or coupons through the mail,in  order to reach some of their local customers and or potential new first time customers.

Here’s one thing they might do it.(Or at least inexpensively test.) They could place a really big brightly colored sign (both) near the counter and posted on the inside door, so all their patrons see it as they’re exiting the store!

It might read; “A bakers dozens donuts 30% off for the next ten (and or X number of) days. This exclusive offer is available to VIP email subscribers only!” (See cashier for details!)

And the cashier(s) just directs them to their WordPress blogs lead capture address, by pointing to the brightly colored lead capture web address on the bottom of the sign.

Why Strategic Email Marketing Definitely Makes Sense For Today’s Savvy Offline Small Business Owners And Or Service Providers!

But let’s say you run a local women’s hair salon. And you’re no marketing guru and or guruette! And your current opt in email subscriber base is only 173!

(Which means, right now their current monthly rate for their paid autoresponder service, is still just somewhere between $15.95$19.95 per month, because they haven’t exceeded 500 opt in subscribers yet!Because once they do, their new monthly rate will be at least $29.95)

So you’ve hardly got a massive list, right? Now for your typical online marketer, that size list is nothing to brag about, agreed? However, watch “how” even that size of (either) a responsive mobile and or opt in email list, can still be extremely lucrative, to your typical offline service provider.

So let’s say that typically during the summer months, things are kinda of slow on Tuesday’s & Thursdays!

So this savvy hair salon owner sends (either) a mobile and or “broadcast” email message on both early Tuesday morning and again early Thursday morning, (throughout the entire summer months),alerting their list, that the first twenty customers (or X) that come to your shop on Tuesday or Thursday of any week throughout the entire summer months, and brings with them anyone over 18, that is a potential brand new first time customer.

Both they and the new potential first time customers, automatically save 30% off whatever they get done!

Plus, the savvy hair salon owner(s) will immediately attempt to “lock” those paying customers in for the next six months or one year, by allowing them to pay for six months or one years worth of wash and trims  and save 25% off for paying six months in advance or 40% off for paying one year in advance!

A Closer Look At The Math Is A Potential Eye Opener!

But let’s take a look at the hypothetical numbers, shall we?Out of 173 total opt inemail subscribers, let’s say 20% still even bother to open their email messages.

Which means, 34.6 or 34 subscribers as a practical matter, even bothered to open their email message. (And let’s not forget, your average text message gets opened within three short minutes of being sent!) (173 x.20% = 34.6 )

And of the 34 subscribers, let’s say 40% take the hair salon owners up on their offer. That means 13 subscribers bring another 13 people with them, and on average we’ll say they both spent $47 dollars each.(It’s just to make the math simple.) (26 x $47 = $1,222 x. 30% off = $855.40)

$47 dollars x 26 paying customers equals a gross profit of $1,222 minus .30% equals $855.40 cents! ($47 x 26 = $1,2222 x .70% = $855.40)

Now they are a couple of ways of interpreting this.First, a years worth of monthly paid autoresponder payments of $19.95, equals $239.40 per year!

And if the savvy hair salon pays it off in one annual payment, they automatically save 20%! (At least you do with my particular paid autoresponder service!) So they only pay $193.80 per year!

(That is until your  opt in list exceeds 500, then your monthly rate goes up, but you still have the option of saving roughly 20%, for making one annual payment.)

So $193.80 annually goes into $855 roughly four times!Which means, they could basically pay their current one time annual autoresponder payment cost, for the next four years!

With one or two simple “broadcast” email and or mobile messages! And that’s with a subscriber base of only 173! And that’s only if 20% initially responded to their message and 40% of the 20% actually took advantage of the offer!

The real point  is, this hypothetical hair salon owner (and or the local bakery owners) are not marketing gurus, by any stretch of the imagination, right?

And of course, the better they get at conversions, the more responsive their subscribers will be, right? Which means more gross profit for them!

That’s “how” and “why” serious offline business owners and or service providers, have to get serious about some of the online marketing opportunities!Don’t you agree?

  1. Hey Mark,

This makes total sense to me. If it’s one thing that will perk up the influx of customers and that is to talk their language by giving them deals that will save them money as well as their close friends and relatives.

These two examples happen quite often. As a matter of fact, I bought a Hyundai 3 yrs back and I’ve seen how they’ve grown since the 1990s. Back then they didn’t have a great reputation but now they have one of the top selling cars. But one thing that they’re doing now is giving deals similar to the hair salon to their custumers. A get a coupon just about every month for oil changes and other types of msintenance.

Back in the days it us to cost an arm and a leg if you go through your dealership for any car problems or maintenance. But now it’s a total different story. At least with Hyundai.

Thanks for sharing g Mark! Have a great upcoming weekend!

  2. Hi Mark,

Love the way you have done this video. You fully explained a step by step way to use Aweber for an opt-in. A re-direct is Brilliant!

I like the way you are explaining how to do emails from the thank you page to the “broadcast” email. Using this way of email marketing the way you have explained here will surely get a good open rate and ROI.

Contests are one sure way to get your list excited to open that email. That is one thing I need to do more of. It sure is powerful! It spreads like wildfire and a great way to do business.

When we leverage our email list it sure does work for us.

    Thanks so much Mark,

Some of the gurus (that are heavily promoting mobile marketing) claim email
marketing is dead, even though they sent you an email message to tell you that!LOL!

Whatever! Thanks so much for your extremely kind words of encouragement!

I’d be willing to bet, a contest where you and David either gave away some Coaching
and your excellent “Blogging Fever” course, along wit a few hours of Coaching, would go over
