You Do Know How Your Long Term Profits Are Being Cannibalized Right?

Ladies & gentlemen, how long have you been intent on earning a profit online? And what (pray tell) specific  steps have you taken or are about to take? In your travels, has the thought ever seriously crossed your mind, that your best efforts have cannibalized your best intentions? Say what? It’s true.

Now on the surface that statement may seem a little over the top, but bare with me. And who knows you might just come to appreciate things from a whole new (and hopefully) enlightened perspective.

Think about all the stuff  you’ve learned and or been exposed to, to this point about monetizing your blog. You know, stuff like selling or placing banner or display ads on your site.

And let’s not forget good old (tried and true) affiliate links. Obviously you came online to share your knowledge and expertise with the world and be justly compensated for it, right?

But therein lies at least part of your problem my friend. Huh?….

Are You Ready To Discover How Your Zest For Profits May Have Actually Cannibalized Your Business?

Let me try and put things in the proper perspective for you. That all important first time visitor (somehow), manages to arrive at your site,  for the very first time.

Which means, you’ve only got a few nano seconds to make a favorable first impression, right? And your site makes an unforgettable first impression all right? First off, you’ve tons tons of banner ads and or affiliate links and or Google ads sense ads plastered all over your site!

(Hey you can’t keep the lights on without profits, right? No argument there. But entrepreneur, you’re literally reaching down (and) settling for the low hanging fruit nickels and dimes, while the long term dollar  bills are (literally) fleeing your site! And guess what? According to recent statistics, a staggering 99% of your all important first time visitors won’t be coming back!

So in other words, in your over zealous quest to generate a few quick bucks, you’ve literally cannibalized your chances for some real long term profits. In at least four potentially profitable ways.

1.) A percentage of those first time visitors, are going to leave your site and not join your list ever! Ouch! Because of all the banner and or affiliate links.

2.) Next, instead of all those banner ads or Google adsense ads, why not add some of your best customer and or client testimonials to your site! And instead of going for the quick buck, like a lot of your online peers.

Instead, look for some proven ways to lower their natural skepticism.Which means they may in fact stick around a little longer and delve deeper into your site and thereby lowering or not negatively affect your bounce rate so much.

3.) Since they’re not coming back to your site, they probably won’t be constantly referring new customers or clients, because all your gaudy banner and or affiliate links, gave them the impression that you’re primarily about a quick buck and not helping them sell their problem(s.)

4.) And lastly, they’re not going to be making that all important first purchase and that first upsell purchase either! And of course, no long term repeat purchases and or no long term back end purchases!Ouch!

All your extremely short sighted actions may have really succeeded in doing is,driving your traffic ( free or paid ) over to your competitors site(s!)

Now ladies & gentlemen, depending how much your customer (and or) clients initial purchase and subsequent long term repeat purchases and upsell purchases and referrals and testimonials are all truly worth over time to your bottom line! Is it really worth jeopardizing all that potential income over a few inadvertent clicks here and there? Especially if you’re paying for the traffic.

If it’s not, you may have just unwittingly cannibalized your business! Don’t you agree?

  1. You are pitch perfect regarding the Ads. I am a crazy football supporter. I have stopped visiting some sites becz of the number of ads and auto play videos on their sites.

And there are few more sites who divide their content 10 pages so that they can show more ads. it is annoying.

    • Agreed!

But hey those type of sites that you’re referring to need those ads in order to
      stay in business!

They use the stats to get you there, but without the advertisers they’re toast!

But I definitely understand where you’re coming from Santosh!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

  2. I ran Google Ads on my main blog when I started out. It wasn’t worth it and I wouldn’t run ads from another provider because Google might not like it.

My method is to write comprehensive posts to be a kind of one stop shop for the topics I write about.

My plan in the next month is to get rid of most of the banners advertising what I sell. No one seems to see them anyway(Sidebar Blindness).

I still think it important for readers to know what you recommend. I was going to create a page rather than post sidebar banner ads but I may rethink. I noticed your own recommended resources, while looking for recent posts. So having a sidebar list rather than banners may work better.

    • Great observations Sue!

The main thing for me is, since this is not a hobby site, all those banner ads
just scream not to take your site seriously! Look at any of the major
seven & eight figure earners sites.

You won’t see that sort of approach, right? And like you said, you get so few clicks and Google
pays so little per click, you whined up literally scaring off the real long term dollars
      for nickels and dimes.

I’ve been to your site a few times and without a doubt you are a wiz, especially at the techie stuff!

Which what most of (myself included) struggle with!LOL!

You should start holding classes built around your various specialties and subjects
you really love teaching best! And what subjects you get questioned on most.

Be create three different levels for each subject. have your beginners, intermediate and advanced students.

And give discounts for signing up for at least two in advance and then offer special discount
rates for private customized one on one coaching/consulting.

Your students that take all three levels of any subject, get the biggest discount percentage
off your consulting rates. And your students who only pay for one level, they pay more per hour.

Offer group sessions and buddy plans, where any two students, possibly friends or business
partners get special discount rates and the same for any three that sign up to consultant
      at once.

That would be your starting group rates. Sue, you’ve got serious skills! Get paid for sharing you expertise!
Why waste your time and energy with nickel & dime Google adsense dribble!

If just makes your visitors think your site is more of a hobby, than a real business! thanks for stopping by and
sharing your insights! I truly appreciate it! Take care!

Don’t be a stranger going forward!

  3. Good post! I really liked the approach of showing testimonials instead of paid ads. It will actually increase the authenticity of your website.

    • So true Adi.

Glad you found some practical value and so
glad you stopped by and decided to share your insights.

Thanks for stopping by and for extremely kind and encouraging words!

Both your kind words and support is greatly appreciated!

  4. Mark,

I love your idea about the testimonials. Many people start a blog in hopes of making money. I think that is the wrong way to go. I have gone to many blogs and am easily distracted by the number of ads on the blog. Now testimonials on the other hand would give the blog more validity in my view and would cause me to give it a second look.

Once I trust a person then I am more open to purchasing from them. I use my blog to connect with people and that connection has led to many sales but it is not my initial intent for blogging that is for sure. My blog is just one aspect of my sales funnel. Thanks for sharing.

    • Great insights Nathaniel!

      Thanks for extremely kind words!

Far too many marketers, especially newbie marketers chase these nickels & dimes and step right over
      the real long term profits!

You obviously have wisely figured out, that’s not the way to go! And as a direct result,
you’re enjoying a much deeper and far more profitable relationship with your target audience!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your extremely astute insights Nathaniel!

      I really appreciate it!

  5. Hi Mark,

Until a blog picks up traffic, it is very tempting to make a few quick bucks with banner ads.

But you are right, this type of advertising does send readers away from your site.

I like your suggestion of displaying testimonials instead – or even highlighting related posts so that your reader is drawn into your own content.

Keeping your readers on your own site as long as possible is the desired result.

    Nice post!

    • Absolutely Neena!

You know, it’s so odd how most online marketers, especially over zealous newbies, they
absolutely hate constantly being pitched and who can blame them.

Yet, more times than not, they’re the very first ones to plaster ads all over their sites, trying
practically anything initially to earn a buck!LOL! Go figure!

It’s just like you said, your main goal is to create content and or an atmosphere that compels
your readers to stick around as long as possible!

Thanks so much for your positive feedback and for stopping by and sharing your
      thoughts. I truly appreciate both!
