How To Make Your Small Business Standout When There Really Isn’t Anything Too Special About It!

So do you have (or maybe), a better question is, “how” many  Mom & Pop type of local coffee shop/diners, small business owners do you have in your town and or village? Probably at least a few, right?

And truth told, they probably aren’t (seriously) thinking about trying to franchise their small businesses anytime soon, right? In fact, more than likely, these extremely dedicated, resource challenged small business owners are probably routinely struggling just trying to figure out how to get or maintain their ever shrinking piece of the local discretionary income pie. Correct?

After all, their potential customers can go practically anywhere in town, to get a cup of average (or less than) average tasting cup of coffee,right? And still pay through the nose for it!

For instance, there’s the major fast food restaurants, the major franchised donut places and a gazillion other local Mom & Pop diner spots that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.Right?

And average to less than average tasting coffee,correct?

So (the ever burning question) begs asking. In a literal sea of massive (and ever) growing competition! Some of which may actually be better financed than you!Why should a cost conscious consumer choose your particular establishment, in order to pay retail for an average or less than average tasting cup of coffee (and or sandwiches or pastries etc.)? Hmm?

And further more, “how” in the world does your extremely cash challenged small business, standout (or) go about standing out, when truth told, there really isn’t anything that’s necessarily special about your business to begin with?

So How Does A Cash Starved Small Business Owner Make Their Business Standout When The Truth Told There Really Isn’t Anything Special About Your Business?

That is an excellent question. Which, (unfortunately) has no simple answer. But here goes: The first major (subtle) change your cash challenged small business is going to make.

Which in reality simply means you’re going to inexpensively test this first major subtle change and closely monitor the results. Here’s what you’re going to do (initially.) Find a reputable upscale gourmet coffee vendor, that sells really (really) good tasting (and therefore) more expensive gourmet coffee.

And for the next 30-60 days (in other words) you’re sending up a marketing trial balloon.You’re only going to serve this upscale coffee (at your actual cost) per cup. So you’re not out to actually make a profit on selling the actual coffee per se!Huh?

Instead, you’re merely attempting to position your establishment as the place to get really good tasting gourmet coffee, at incredibly reasonable prices! Where as the other places (including) the local more upscale restaurants, typically sell a large cup of this type of exotic coffee for $7 dollars per cup or more!

You’re actually going to sell your large (jumbo cup) for just $2.79 per cup and your medium size cup for just $1.29 per cup!(And no small size cups will be sold at all!)

Plus, you’ll offer small free samples to brand new first time customers! So they and your repeat customers can sample any new flavors you (and the vendors) might wanna try out. Now to this point, let’s make sure (we’re both) on the same page.

Learning How To Properly Position Yourself Is An Incredibly Powerful And Effective Marketing Tool!

You’re going to approach a really upscale gourmet coffee vendor (and or vendors) and propose, that if they’ll sell you some of their best (most) popular upscale gourmet coffees (at their actual cost), you in turn will sell it to your customers at the exact same cost!Huh?

In order to help both of you (rather inexpensively) grow your market share and customer base.

Now, just in case you’re wondering “how” in the world does this type of (what on the surface) would appear to be nothing more than a rather fancy break even type of marketing proposition.What’s the ultimate end game here?

Your subtlety positioning your establishment (through) powerful on and offline positive word of mouth advertising, as the one (or one of) the absolute best places in town to get really inexpensive, yet great tasting gourmet coffee!

And believe it, that type of powerful word of mouth talk, spreads awfully fast! Especially in a small town and or village!

Which means a steady stream of potential new long term repeat customers/ consumers will start showing up to see for themselves, what all the fuss is about!

Now in part two, we’ll dive even deeper into “how” you can use this incredibly simple (battlefield tested) marketing approach to not only gradually differentiate yourself from the rest of your cash starved local competitors, but also how to use it to further inexpensively create a powerful, positive “word of mouth” local army that sings your praises high and low!

Now of course, it goes without saying, that some of your regulars may in fact not care for your more high brow approach and therefore, they may decide to patronize another local business! (And they may even go so far as to let both you and or the hire help know it! Both on and offline!)

But what you’re really going after here is, you wanna create this powerful (local) positive word of mouth army,asap! And then  continuously fuel their enthusiasm.You’ll see “how” in part two.

For now, hopefully, you can see and are starting to appreciate “how” any cash starved small business owner (and or service provider) can and should strategically use good old fashion “positioning” in to order to effectively make your business standout, when the truth told, there really isn’t anything too special about your business to begin with!

I follow many of the usual entrepreneur publications and more often than not the articles target the power hungry new entrepreneur – certainly never the “mom and pop” type small businesses.

    I think it’s easy for many small business owners to become overwhelmed when when they try to transition into the “modern” business reality, but as you always point out so well, anyone can achieve greater success with ingenuity and the courage to try. Thanks for the inspiration!

      And I quite agree with your assessment about your all too typical small business owner/service provider
      constantly struggling with trying to transition to ever changing more modern day business landscape!

      And I’ll certainly be the first to admit that initially, I thought this whole social media thing, was simply
      for celebrities, college students or HS students, with way too much free time on their hands!LOL!

      A big mistake for sure! Especially once I was more properly educated about it.

      I began to warm to the possibilities and realities of it more and more!So I definitely get both
      their confusion and initial apprehension.

      But M, it’s just like when I first started getting addicted to the writings on your blog!LOL!

      Until I got exposed to the right communicator (that being you!)

      I always totally underestimated and naively dismissed the type of real benefits that
      can definitely be derived, simply by gaining a much more in dept understanding and realization of many of the
