a while back, there was a boxing match on HBO. And rumor has it, one of the fighters, was paid a staggering $250,000 dollars. To have one of the major hotels, (turns out), not the major hotel, where the fight was actually being held.
But a major hotel, located within a five block radius of where this major prize fight card was being televised on HBO’s extremely popular and oh so lucrative network.
Anyway. This other major hotel, (for some odd reason!), thought it made sense, to pay or investment, if you prefer), a quarter of a million dollars.
Having the name of their hotel, temporarily stenciled on the fighters back. This way, as literally millions of men and women, from all over the world tuned in. Guess which major hotel chains name, they would see, temporarily stenciled on this guys back? Bingo.
On paper, I agree this particular promotional/marketing approach, kid of makes sense. Does it not? Yea sort of.
However, wait til you hear the other shoe drop. Huh? Sadly, as the fight worn on. And the more this fighter started to sweat.
Guess what rapidly started to happened, to the temporary stencil? If you accurately concluded, it virtually disappeared, by the end of the six or seventh round.
You are correct-da-mundo. Seems like an awfully expense way, for corporate America, to waste a quarter million dollars. Would you not agree? And “whose’ to say, how many times they’ve actually invested this much money, with several different fighters. Yikes. (Let’s hope not.)
It’s Definitely Not The Initial Size Of Your Advertising Or Marketing Budget Which Ultimately Makes The Real Difference!
What “if” instead of that totally questionable approach. That very same casino, (if nothing else), strategically A/B split test the following, positive, viral word of mouth and mouse generating strategies and tactics.
Head to head, against the outrageously expensive, dismally performing, aforementioned approach. Basically, part of their marketing team, will now invest 50 or X% of the $250,000 dollar allocation.
And here’s “how” they plan on generating, (not only) a ton of initial, positive word of mouth and mouse buzz. For this major four or five star hotel chain. But going forward, create a ton of long term buzz and repeat, high end customers. for literally pennies on the dollar.
First. Every female customer, who entered the casino where the fight card was taking place. As long as they buy at least $50 dollars worth of chips. They will automatically be given an extremely time sensitive gift certificate. Say what?
To the gift shop. And they will receive a free, 32 oz. bottle, of one of the top, women- perfume distributors, most popular fragrances.Huh? Which is normally a $350 dollar value. Truth told, their actually hard cost, is somewhere around $75-$125 dollars.
but the long term, positive, residual word of mouth benefits. Both on and off of social media. Make this short term investment, more than worth it. don’t you agree? Me too.
You Just Get The Ball Rolling An then Step Aside! (And Start Reaping The Constant Long Term Benefits!)
So picture an already extremely crowded casino, with, (let’s say) 2,500 gamblers, constantly coming and going. And at least half of them, 1,250 are women. And the first 500 or X number of women who buy at least $50 or X number dollars of chips.
They get this extremely time sensitive gift certificate, to stop a specific gift shop, and get a free 32 oz. bottle of an incredibly popular perfume. And they also receive a special lead capture page to go to, in order to enter a free drawing, for a chance to win an absolutely beautiful $5,000 thousand dollar, diamond studded necklace. Say what?
