Five Extremely Powerful Marketing Lessons A Trip To Grocery Deli Taught Me!

(And How They Can Definitely Benefit You Too!)

I’ll bet when you’re doing your weekly or bi-weekly grocery shopping, you’re not also simultaneously comparing the two major local super market chains,  and their various marketing approaches, are you? I didn’t think so.

So in your immediate local area, do you have a favorite (major) supermarket chain to shop for the vast majority of your weekly purchases? Yea, I guess I’d say I sort of fall into that category too.

Although, (truth told), I do find that each of the two primary local supermarket chains that I frequent on a weekly basis, (both) have certain products, (irregardless) of the price, I still prefer one particular product over the other.

So I’ll gladly pay a little more here and there, just because I enjoy the taste of it over the other. But just recently, (while) of all places, standing waiting to be served at the deli counter of one of two major  supermarket chains, that I frequent, the following five, (potentially profitable), marketing revelations came to my attention. See “how” many of them are applicable to your particular, business, product or service(s) as well!

So What Are These Five Extremely Powerful Marketing Lessons A Trip To The Local Grocery Deli Taught Me?

(And How Can They Benefit You Too!)

First of all, I want you to know and understand, I totally get that both of these major (corporate) grocery store chains have complete and direct access to some of the most qualified, and experienced retail marketing minds around!

And I’m quite sure both chains frequently do more than their fair share of various types of ongoing and highly intense marketing research! However, while standing there (simply) observing “how” the deli attendants went about, busily serving their customers and waiting for my chance for them to do the same with me.

The following five, (for lack of a better) phrase or term,“marketing revelations,” suddenly rushed to the fore part of my marketing mind, and I thought they might help you, (not only) get more overall enjoyment out of running your own business and or service, but help make doing so even more profitable as well!

So that’s the spirit in which these particular marketing ideas are being shared!

1.) Major marketing revelation (and or) marketing lesson # one: This first marketing revelation/marketing lesson occurred to me as I was waiting to be served at the deli counter, while simultaneously listening to some much needed self development material via my head phones. 😎

When I observed  “what” appeared to be a really brief conversation taking place, between the deli manager and or supervisory type of individual and one of the deli attendants.

And he was pointing out, (a technique) that has personally been one of my long held beliefs and this supervisor had just officially confirmed it! (As I briefly spoke to him, regarding the use of the technique), in order to officially confirm my long held belief, was in fact accurate! 😎

He was basically suggesting that the deli attendants use a form  of  implied “social proof” when they put out each offering. So he suggested they scoop out a spoonful or two, so that each food item looked like it had already been consumed by previous customers! 😉

Simply because, ladies & gentlemen, nobody likes to be a pioneer when it comes to being the first one to try some sort of dish! (Especially new or exotic ones!) 😎 And for years, when it comes to pro-actively marketing any type of food products, (and in some cases) select services too, I’ve held the exact same train of thought! 😎

Sometimes The Simplest Marketing Lessons Are The Most Profound Too!

2.)  Major marketing revelation (and or) marketing lesson # two: This next marketing revelation, (in my opinion) has more to do with good old fashion, marketing common sense, than anything else!

Here was the next marketing revelation/potentially profitable marketing lesson that definitely caught my attention, (and I therefore) felt and feel like it was worth sharing!

As the attendants were busy courteously giving the various customers samples of different types of meats, and them weighing them to the customers exact specifications. I noticed (as I’m sure) other customers did as well!

The scale itself started to get a little unsanitary looking, from the various meat particles left on the scale after a while. My thoughts at the point were, one of the savvy deli attendants should have just taken a moment to thoroughly clean/sanitize the scale right in front of us, before continuing!

Because that would have not only conveyed, a great eye for detail, and top flight customer service, but also conveyed the entire cleanliness (marketing) train of thought as well! Especially for the Mothers & fathers with little ones waiting to be served!Don’t you agree?

A Lot Of Times Some Of Your Best Marketing Opportunities Are Right In Front Of You! (Just Waiting To Be Discovered And Or Implemented!)

3.) Major marketing revelation (and or) marketing lesson # three: This next marketing revelation, just seems like basic opportunity marketing 101!

And this would especially apply to a smaller, (far more customer service orientated) Mom & Pop retail store/deil and or a combination of retail store/bakery. Let’s start with the bakery marketing angle, because it’s just waiting to happen!

Why not (inexpensively) test having a free monthly “Birthday club”,  drawing, that if nothing else, targets kids ages five to twelve!

And if after a little strategic testing & tweaking, you could then target Mothers (for Mothers Day) and Valentines Day too! And maybe wedding anniversaries too! The main point being, target the parents and have them enter their kids or grand kids those ages and start building a highly responsive, opt in email and or text message list!

And once a month host a party where the grand prize “birthday club” winning kids wins a really nice 4- 6 hour party where they get to invite a grand total of 20 other local kids, (that must be) accompanied by at least one adult parent and or legal guardian 18 & over!

And the kids gets to choose any two popular DVD’s of their choice, out of your selection and you’ll serve pizza, burgers, wings and of course ice cream!

And don’t forget to video tape about 5 minutes of the actual footage of kids going nuts and add frequently add new footage to your mobile responsive WordPress blog! And don’t forget the special T-shirts you’ll have made, to pass out to all of the kids in attendance!

Plus the parent and or accompanying guardian of the grand prize winning kid, also wins a $50 dollar grocery store coupon as well!Twitter,Instagram or FB anyone? 😉

Really Good Marketing Is All About Serving Your Particular Clientele!(Don’t You Agree?)

Now only because there’s simply  whole lot more to cover! And not nearly enough available space to do it in! Let’s cover the remaining two marketing revelations/marketing lessons, and a whole lot more in part two, okay? Thanks!

I totally appreciate it! That way we can (and most definitely will), spread it on thick! 1. Great post Mark,
I also go shopping once awhile and one thing i always find out is that in most stores, their customer service simply sucks and i always imaging what it would have been like if they offers a perfect customer service to their various customer.

At some of them, you will see one or two people attending to over 50 customers while they’re all queued up in a line. Why not these people arrange at least up to 5 to even 10 people to be attending to all these customers? At least, it reduce the time a customer has to wait for him to be attended to.

  2. Hi Mark,

I think as the others said, the deli would have turned me off with the uncleanliness. However, the supervisor should have stepped in and said something to them. How can you market your product without having a pristine appearance?

In every business, there is always a clear cut marketing opportunity. Some just don’t get it. You go to my favorite grocery store where employees are stocking the shelves yet they won’t get out of the way to allow you to buy your favorite products. Good marketing would be for the employee to realize you are standing there wanting to grab something off the shelf and allow you to get it.

To have a great business presence, we must learn how to market properly. Thanks for sharing this!

    • Isn’t that the truth Brenda!

I’ve experienced exactly what you’re describing, with regards to some less
than market savvy employees over the years!LOL!

And more times than not, (unfortunately) these are some of the very same
employees, that somehow feel they should be paid top dollar, merely for
      showing up!LOL!

Great points! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable input!
It’s always welcome and so greatly appreciated!

  3. Hi Mark,

Ew, a dirty scale would certainly turn me off. I’m a germophobe who has particular taste. While I’m sure the previous order was delicious to that customer, I would want no parts of it on mine.

The overall feel of a store, like the cleanliness and clutter, impacts my decision to go there in the future. So you certainly have a good point!

    • That’s definitely the truth Lea!!

And while I definitely don’t necessarily consider myself a “germophobe” per se!LOL!

I gotta admit, as I was watching this particular situation unfold, I found it
rather odd, these deli attendants didn’t quickly come to the exact same conclusions!

And I couldn’t agree more, that seemingly minor over sight on their part,
will most definitely cause some of their extremely valued customer base to start doing
      their deli shopping elsewhere!LOL!

Those are some really great points Lea!Thanks so much for sharing them!

  4. I’ll never look at the deli in our grocery store the same! And you are right of course, I do tend to stick to one store but I’ve comparison shopped my little heart out over the years and now – busy little Entrepeneur/Author that I am – my priority is convenience. I suppose that goes for many things these days, but then there is that old saying about time being money and we know that is all too true! Another great read Mark. 🙂

    • It’s true M!

And the really sad part is, in this hyper age of both on & offline, various
forms of social media, you can bet at least some of their extremely customer
base will come to that exact same conclusion and they tweet and tell a ton of
      people about it!

Over lunch, while their sitting in their Dr. or Dentist or waiting to get their hair or nails done
      etc!LOL!

So how much does not paying attention to minor details actually cost any business, but especially a cash
challenged, struggling small business owner and or service provider!

Great points as usual M! Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing them!
