Business Opportunities: Just Because They’re Everywhere Doesn’t Mean You have To Squander Them!

Ever heard of superstar marketing consultant and best selling author Jeff Slutsky? He wrote a hard cover book entitled “Street Smart Marketing.”  Jeff shared an incredible story in his book about “how”a savvy stock broker took advantage of one of the business opportunities that came his way, while paying a toll booth of all things.

Apparently, as this savvy stock broker was paying his daily toll booth,he instinctively got in the habit of (quickly) checking his rear view mirror.

And whenever he spotted a luxury car. Guess what he would do? He’d hand the toll booth operator enough cash to pay for both his and the luxury car drivers toll! But he would paper clip his business card to the money and ask the the toll employee to inform the driver that their toll was paid by the car ahead of them, and then they’d hand the driver the stock broker’s card!

Now (entrepreneur) is that taking advantage of business opportunities or what? You got that right.

Are You Sure You’re Not Constantly Squandering Potential Business Opportunities?

Does the name Jack Welch ring a bell? Yea the very same that was the former CEO of GM. Jack Welch tells the story of “how” he keeps his business cards with him, so that  whenever he meets (what) he considers an exceptional person that’s currently employed somewhere else, he can offer them a better unique opportunity with him!

Again, is that meeting potential business opportunities half way or what? And finally what about your particular business, product or service? How often do you go about systematically taking advantage of your potential business opportunities?

For ex: let’s suppose you run a retail store located inside the (extremely busy) local mall and your store caters to toddlers and kids ten and under. Since you’re always on the lookout for untapped potential business opportunities, right?

Why not turn lunch time into more than just an opportunity for cheating on your diet? Huh? Go up to the food court and make an arrangement with one of the most popular food vendors, and here’s “what” you do.

Create a special two sided VIP discount coupon, and on side A have it say in really big letters, “Congratulations!” You have qualified for a ten dollar credit courtesy of and name the food court! And on the flip side say, ‘”Because you are an extremely valued customer of X!

You are entitled to receive 25% off your very next purchase at (the name of your store!) But you must hurry! Because this exclusive offer is only for an extremely limited time and expires on!” (And you list the date!)

Have have the food court employees pass these out to any people there with small kids! (But especially any women with small kids or toddlers from ages blank to blank! Depending on how much you can safely afford to invest to get/create new customers, get busy with this one!

And that’s how you take advantage business opportunities, that are all around you! Any questions?

  1. I’ve never really considered myself as an extremely high level entrepreneurial thinker, but thanks so much for the compliment! 🙂

  2. Hi Mark,

This is a great post. What I found refreshing about this is how you highlighted the subject of business opportunities. It seems that usually people mostly think of business opportunities as some method of getting into some kind of business. But you highlighted the opportunities that we should be on the lookout when we have existing businesses and how to capitalise on those.

The examples you gave remind me of a couple of online techniques for getting leads – one is launching a free WSO on the Warrior Forum, using that as an incentive for people to give their e-mail address.

Another is using bonuses for affiliate products we promote, or perhaps using competitions to attract people into taking notice of what we have to offer and then signing up.

Ultimately, we need to be aware of the many opportunities around us and not let them slip by. It can sometimes involve stepping outside of our comfort zone or taking a leap of faith, but neither of those can be achieved without movement – we have to always take action, even imperfect action, and DO something!

Thanks for the awesome post, Mark. Have yourself a great week. 🙂

    • Thank you Glen!

Coming from an extremely high level entrepreneurial thinker such as yourself, that is a much appreciated
      compliment.

You mentioned the warrior forum, that has been around so long, which is proof positive that opportunities
to stretch creatively, are always all around us! But unless we’ve been trained to think outside the box, or
surround ourselves with people like you, that do!

We’ll never be able to tap into the practically limitless potential opportunities, that merely require the proper mindset in order to embrace them!
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

Both your feedback and support and greatly appreciated!

  3. Hey Mark,

Those are very clever ideas my friend.

The toll booth one is just smart so I can imagine when you’re in a business like that you have to come up with some creative ways to drum up more business. How can people not be impressed by that!

I had a guy on LinkedIn share with me some time ago how he approaches the people who connect with him and he’s gotten a lot of clients from that as well. He had a specific product to offer them which at the time he shared that with me I didn’t. I’ve been tweaking it though to fit my specific business.

Just smart business that’s for sure. Great ideas and thanks for sharing.

    • Excellent coach!

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I gotta tell you, Jeff Slutsky is the absolute
brilliant marketer that shared that marketing tip in one of his books that I read.

And the very first couple of times that I read it, it absolutely blew me away! Because
it was so “think outside the box!”

And as far as tweaking goes, I’ve been steadily applying the exact same proven mindset, to all I learned through your
continual coaching, mentoring and friendship so far!

As always, thanks for reaching out,and offering a guiding hand, when I really needed it!

That means an awful lot coach! You are a true leader and great example of how to extend your
proven experience and expertise to others! Especially, when they need it most! As always both
your feedback and support are greatly appreciated!

  4. Hi Mark. No toll booths near me, but the idea is a great one. I know I squander opportunities, but you’ve inspired me to start looking more closely.

    All the best,

I have to tell you this, the very first time I read Jeff’s strategy, my mind literally
      exploded with marketing possibilities!

It was like that concept opened up my brain and poured in some brand new
      marketing creativity cells!LOL!

Once you get exposed to “think outside the box” type thinkers like that, you get stretched creatively and you simply
can’t go back to how you thought before! Don’t you agree?

And as far as squandering untapped marketing opportunities, we’re all guilty of it!LOL!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! Your support as always is greatly appreciated!

And so glad you found some value in this post!

  5. Hi Mark,
Nice post. Some great and unique ideas for getting yourself out there and notices. I especially like the one of paying the toll for the limo behind you.

That particular idea was shared by the one & only Jeff Slutsky, and I gotta tell you,
the very first time I heard about it, it blew my lid clean off with marketing possibilities!

That guy (like all) truly great marketers, really knows how to think outside the box!

Don’t you agree? Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! your support and feedback are always greatly appreciated!
