So What Do Adult Elephants And Your Personal Development Have In Common?

So What Do Adult Elephants And Your Personal Development Have In Common?

Have you ever seen something in (either) your business and or personal life, that you just thought was flat out strange and or odd? Even backwards if you will? Not to be judgmental or anything. But just strange.

For ex; why or how in the world, does a 16 year old HS sophomore get elected as mayor of a town, (when) first of all, aren’t they technically too young to even hold public office?

But closer to home still. With a town full of (supposedly) capable, intelligent adults and professional career politicians! How does something like this happen? (Repeatedly!) No less.(Just saying!)

Okay, but that rather strange turn of events not withstanding. Can you even begin to understand and or totally appreciate the unfortunate connection between a full blown adult elephant and your current and or long term personal development? Say what?

Hold on… Because it’s not quite as far fetched and or as unrelated as it might initially appear. And it’s certainly no more far fetched than a two term incumbent mayor that’s still under the age of twenty! Yes, there are some things that simply defy logic. You be the final judge…

So There’s Actually Suppose To Be Some Kind Of Plausible Connection Between A Full Blown Adult Elephant And Your Current And Or Future Long Term Personal Development?

(Really?)

First of all lets clear something up, right out of the gate. There is absolutely no ill will towards teenagers in general and or 16 year old’s in particular. But mayor, at that age? Really!

That said; here’s the hub.Ladies & gentlemen, do you have any idea (without Googling it!), what the average weight of a full blown adult elephant is? Or how about the average weight of your typical one year old baby elephant? (Irregardless of their gender.)

Well, believe it or not, the typical adult elephant weighs an astounding 12,000 Lbs! And the one year old baby elephant typically weighs (one tenth) of that amount. Or about 1,200 Lbs.(Pretty staggering either way, don’t you agree?)

So here’s the $64,000 dollar question; which is not a trick question BTW. If you had to make an educated guess, which of the two do you think is the strongest? The full blown adult or the one year old? Agreed!

Well now, perhaps you can (realistically) explain the following rather odd set of circumstances.

Adult elephants (that would be the 12,000 pound ones!) are typically tied to a rather flimsy wooden stake (that’s not driven too deep into the ground)  and held with a really thin piece of yarn! Say what?

While the one year old, is typically tied to a solid metal stake that’s driven (usually) at least one or two feet into the ground!Huh?  And held in place with a rather thick solid metal chain.

Are Your Self Imposed Obstacles Really Chains Or Merely Strands Of Yarn?

And truth told (Hercules) on his best day would probably have trouble escaping. Now here’s the question. Entrepreneur, doesn’t (both) your gut and (good old) common sense say, they’ve got this scenario backwards?

After all, given the choice! Would you rather take your chances against a full grown 12,000 LB adult elephant on the war path or the less experienced 1,200 LB youngster?

Exactly! So what’s up with this? It’s very simple.

You see; (many, many) years ago, that adult elephant (when they) were an untrained youngster. That very same metal stake and chain, was used to hold them in place! Huh?

So that  (even though) as they continually grew physically over time. They struggled and struggled to get free! Until finally guess what? Once they became full blown (extremely) capable adults!

With way more physical strength than perhaps even Hercules! (Or at least close!) They simply believed that any time something was placed around their neck, they couldn’t break free!  (No matter what!) Even if that something was no more powerful than a mere piece of yarn! Say what?

Now then; contrast that to the (yet to be) trained ( more like conditioned) one year old youngster. They haven’t been totally conditioned yet! Have they?  Bingo! Which (dear profit seeking entrepreneur) brings us full circle, doesn’t it?

You see, (believe it or not!) throughout the years, you and I have constantly been told (more like) conditioned  (bombarded if you will!) (by so called) well meaning friends, family members, loving parents, teachers, respected religious clergy, ex’s, significant others,in law’s, spouses, best friends, associates, current or ex – employers, or ex-well meaning co-workers etc.

About all the things that we simply “can’t” or “shouldn’t do!” Right?Don’t start that business, now’s not the right time etc. Every time you try something new you fail! Or don’t be involved with or marry that person etc! You’re not an entrepreneur! You’ll always have to work for somebody else! The business world is too cut throat etc!

If It’s Repeated Often Enough It Tends To Gradually Get Accepted As Fact!

(So Why Not Constantly Reinforce The Positive!)

And on and on! My friend, psychologically (over time) all that positive stimulus begins to have a rather profound effect! Would you not agree? So that after a while (years!) You and I (sadly) reach the point (mentally and emotionally) that no matter “what”  the current true potential opportunities are.

Just like the thin piece off yarn around that full fledged (fully capable) adult elephants neck, we’re mentally and emotionally chained (more like) imprisoned by false beliefs!

And that my friend (sadly) is the down right sinister connection between a full blown (mentally conditioned) adult elephant and your current and or future long term personal development! Any questions?

  1. Oh Mark I love this message and you were so right when you said you thought I’d get it … in fact by the 3rd paragraph I knew right where you were going and I think you’ve made a brilliant point!

One of the toughest things for people to break out of is the sludge pile of limiting beliefs they’ve collected and carefully nurtured over the years. People will say to me “I really want to(fill in the blank), it’s just that I’m afraid of failure (making a fool of myself, criticism, etal).” No matter how many times I hear that, I keep waiting for the punchline, but that’s always it. Then I ask what they’re doing about it? Sadly, more often than not it’s nothing, nada, zip, zingo, bupkus. There’s a world of opportunities just waiting for those with the courage to take that first step!

Thanks for the great read – sorry it took me awhile to get over here.I’ve gotten myself into one of those “30 day challenges” … nuf said.

    • M, you have truly made my day!

Much thanks for your extremely kind words and for sharing your thoughts!

And I knew as sure as I was writing that post, that the one person that would definitely get it,
      was you!LOL!

      I freaking knew it! It’s almost a classic out of your playbook!LOl! And like you pointed out;
that stock pile of sludge is awfully entrenched!

thanks as always for adding so much to the exchange! And I wasn’t least wondered about you
responding, because I knew when you found the time, you would!

      Fabulous M! Thank you!

  2. Wow … I was very lost at the beginning, but SO intrigued to figure out the connections. What a great analogy!

    • Awesome Heather!

Thank you so much for such a great and truly inspiring and encouraging compliment!

All I ever really hoped to accomplish with this particular post, was to draw some much
needed attention to some of our own self imposed mental and emotional bondage!

And how just like that thick metal chain and steel stake, once put in place they can be practically
      impossible to escape!

So glad you found some value and enjoyed it!

  3. If you put your mind to it, it can get done… regardless of the naysayer. I was having a little bit of a hard time getting through your analogy, but I got it and agree.

Yea, the basic overall message is pretty Mary plain Jane! The basic message being
that it’s predominately our very own self imposed prisons that are really
consistently doing the most to sabotage our chances for long term success!

thanks sharing your thoughts and for your continuous support!

      Both are greatly appreciated!

  4. Great connection between the baby elephant, adult elephant, and stages of entrepreneurship. I was wondering how you were going to piece it together! It is true that the people who surround us influence us so much that we no longer believe in ourselves. So much talent is simply wasted just because we are repeatedly told that we cannot do something. If people were more supportive and we kept that strong believe in ourselves, the world could be completely different right now. There would be less poverty, less violence, and more technology. Thank you for sharing this!

    • Awesome Kyle! Thanks!

And you are so right! so many things would in fact be so much better, if we could, just first consistently
think different and thereby act different and bring about a completely
different long term (far more positive) outcome!

and like you said, ultimately on some level or another, we are a result
of who and what we consistently surround ourselves with.

And what we consistently program into our mental computers!Fabulous assessment!

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your powerful incites!

      It’s greatly appreciated!

  5. Mark, I love the mindset story of the elephant, and indeed some of our negative mindsets are learned and experiential behaviours. Let’s hope the teen mayor can make some positive changes as he has a blank canvas to work from 🙂

    • Let’s hope you’re right about the mayor!LOL!

And I couldn’t agree more about the emotional prison that far too of us
      may find ourselves in!

      And just like that thick metal chain and that iron stake;
it’s grip (without) the proper help, is almost impossible to
      escape!

Thanks so much for sharing your extremely valuable
insights and for your continuous support!

      I definitely appreciate both!

  6. Hi Mark. I never knew that about elephants. You you are right on in sharing that as a perfect analogy for how we limit ourselves by getting conditioned over time to the “negative talk.” I’m definitely going to try to recognize if I have “strings” holding me back as well!

Awesome, inspirational article. I’ll definitely be sharing the elephant story with my kids. Thanks for sharing it!

Without a doubt, we’re all on some level or another, victims of the of
      those very same emotional chains!

  7. Hi Mark,

I also have to admit I didnt know where your posting was going at the start but reading on I really got what you where talking about. I was in the wrong mindset for a while and couldnt even imagine having my own blog never mind a buisness online. It is very easy to get tied down and stuck on silly little things to stop us succeeding when all it takes is some self belief and positivity.

    Thanks again

      extremely valuable insights and thoughts!

And welcome again to the B3 community!

  8. Mark,
I must say the truth… when I first start reading your article.. I just could not figure out there was any relationship between the elephant explanation and our personal or business behavior.. but as I went down further.. it start to make sense … you are correct.. we are tied up to some invisible “peg” that was ingrained in us along our lifetime and some how we deal life (personal and professional) without even knowing until someone (this time you) come along and wake us up to pay attention and do something about it.

Thanks so much for the wake up cal.. very useful for me at this time.

And I’m glad you found some value in the post!

And unfortunately as you say, there is a whole lot of emotional
and mental baggage that we carry around and stock pile!

And sadly, it holds us hostage, just like the metal stake and chain imprisons
      that unsuspecting baby elephant!

Thanks for sharing extremely positive thoughts and for your
      continuous support!

      Both are greatly appreciated!

  9. Mark,

Excellent metaphor. The image of the baby elephant struggling, trying to get free, and the strong adult elephant no longer trying because of the belief that it cannot get free….

I thought you were going to talk about the huge size of the adult elephant and how if we try to achieve that huge goal all at once, it would be impossible. But if we take baby steps, try something new as a baby elephant and keep taking more steps….

That was a fun post to read – kept my interest and attention. Well done. And you got the point across. Our mindset is all that really matters, after all is said and done.
