How To Get The Most Out Of Your Website

Today you’re about to be introduced to a very special guest blogger and expert web designing entrepreneur connection of mine. He’s my bud and fellow Linkedin connection.

His name is Andrew Spiers. And he’s the founder of Lens Digital – http://wearelens.co.uk, which is a UK based wed design agency.

And they specialize in helping, small business owners, service providers, as well as startup entrepreneurs, consistently get the most productivity out of their websites.

I’ve asked Andrew to share some of the most common web designing mistakes, his firms constantly sees, being made, over and over again. And you and I need to do, in order to correct them.

He’s written this blog post, to help you and I avoid them going forward.so without further ado. Take it away Andrew…

After a recent local business network event, I met with someone who wanted me to have a look at their website with a view to doing a redesign.

Within 10 minutes, I had filled a page of my notebook with a list of simple improvements that could be made to the site. A lot of these I see repeatedly so I thought I would share some simple tips on getting the most from your website.

Tell People What You Do

Sounds simple doesn’t it? But so many people have a nice homepage without actually saying what it is that their business does.

If you have a look at our website (https://wearelens.co.uk), it is there plain and clear what we do. Underneath the message is the Call To Action.

If you have an area of operation, then include that. There is no point people looking at your website if you do not operate in their area.

Perhaps you are an award winning company or you have been operating for 50 years – include all of that – try and stand out from the crowd.

The only exception to this is if you are so well known in your field that you need no introduction.

Make It Easy To Find Information

Make sure that your site navigation is clear and simple. Try and guide your users around your website.

I tend to put the pages that I want users to start with first. I always put the contact link on the far right of the menu. Users are instinctive, that is the place they usually look.

However, just because you perceive it to be the best place to start, your users may not agree.

Using tools such as Hotjar, you can see where people are clicking on a page or even create recordings of their visits, so you can really see how they interact with your website.

Make It Easy To Contact You

There is no point having a website if you make it impossible for people to contact you. Don’t hide away your contact details – make them visible in several places.

On our website, we have contact details in the header and footer of every page along with a dedicated contact page. No-one can ever say that it is hard to get in-touch with us.

Contact forms can also be used to help you gather information from the client. A contact form can be built to collect a key piece of information.

So that you are more informed when you respond. If you look at our website project page

(https://wearelens.co.uk/services/wordpress-website-development/tell-us-about-your-website-project/), you will see that we are gathering all of the information we need, to ensure that the first contact with the client is meaningful.

People Are Impatient (and so is Google)

Getting into the technical realms now – performance. Two seconds is considered the benchmark for the response of any web page. Anything longer and you will start to lose visitors. Google will also start to penalize your website(s.)

There are plenty of tools and guides on how to improve the load time of your website. Our favorites include GTMetrix and Pingdom. Both of these tools break down a websites load time so that you can see what is taking up the time.

If you are using WordPress, try and avoid adding too many plugins. Restricting your plugins to an absolute minimum will help you keep the site load time down.

This list is not meant to be a definitive list, but a starting point for things to consider when you are trying to get the most out of your website.
