Honestly, has there ever been in time, in your current or past business business ventures, when you were (literally) attempting (once again) to successfully market your, business, products and or services and your initial marketing budget, was all but non existent?

(Or it was barely existent on paper only, in and of the fact, you had allocated for it on your computer generated spread sheet! 😎 )

Does that sound like an all too familiar tune? And even though you attempted at being, (what some might) refer to as mildly creative, your best efforts, (ultimately) came up just a little bit short!Again! You too! Congratulations and welcome to “the real world!”  😉

While it’s definitely an undeniable fact, that you may not necessarily need a fortune 500 type of marketing budget, in order to make a real go of it.

But (entrepreneur) what you lack in readily available cash, you (or somebody within) your organization, better be able to make up, (at least) part of that difference, with some  good old fashion marketing know how. That at some point, definitely yields some bankable results!Would you not agree? Great!

So let’s see “how” in the world, you (and or) one of your major (local) competitors, could successfully market your cash starved deli, even though (truth told), your so called marketing/advertising budget, is practically zero!

(And Borrowing Money From Well Meaning Friends Or Family Members Or A Local Bank And Or Credit Union Is Simply Not A Viable Option Yet!)

First of all, ladies & gentlemen, contrary to what you may actually believe, the real purpose of the above (main) power headline and sub headline, is not to simply be provocative! No sir!Far from it!

Instead, it’s to signal to you right up front, that ultimately) your cash challenged small to mid size business and or service, will ultimately sink or swim, not based on whether you can or can’t secure any type of (so called) conventional financing, (and or) some type of temporary bridge loan financing from a local bank, private investment group and or credit union etc.

Or whether or not, some of your closest, well meaning friends and family members can temporarily loan you any money and or flat out invest in your business venture!

Do You Really Need A Fancy Marketing Degree From Harvard Business School In Order To Successfully Market Your Business, Products And Or Services?

For some odd reason, whenever small business owners and or service providers, (especially) those that only have one shop and or one van to begin with.

They all too often focus really hard on successfully growing their business, simply by increasing (both) their current customer and or client base and increasing their gross sales volume and revenues.

And while those are certainly admirable goals to diligently pursue!often times, (especially) in the very beginning, when their money is extremely tight, they would do equally well, to set out to systematically lower their ongoing expenses, as much as possible!

That way, they could literally gross the same amount of money per day, week, quarter and year,  but actually net an overall higher gross profit, simply because they’ve discovered some proven ways to lower their overall expenses!Cool, right? 😎

Case in point, (first of all) rather than flush a ton of your extremely limited cash trying to send your fancy (outrageously expensive) four color brochures, within a five to ten mile radius around your business, and get virtually little or no responses!

Which simply means, going into the next week or month or quarter, you’ve got even less readily available working capital to strategically invest in your business!(Been there and done that! 😎 )

  1. Hey Mark,

I like the idea of the raffle that you discussed. I just had a conversation with someone about this today…and I think it’s a cool idea (plus – people love to win things).

I am at the place now where I feel that there are enough possibilities (if I allow my imagination to work properly) to find ways to creatively market if my budget is lower than I’d like it to be. I am reminded of a small – hole in the wall type of restaurant from 25 years ago that had a unique niche (health food – at the time, it was a small concept). They were very busy…and then they took on a new space in a fancy shopping center on the water.

Soon after, they went out of business.
I’m not entirely sure what happened, especially since the demand for healthy foods, etc has since taken off. They would have had some longevity behind them if they hadn’t made whatever mistake they made to cause their closing…but I’m thinking they just took on more expense than they could manage – even with the demand for more space.

I think there has to be a balance between supporting your business…and spending money you don’t have.

It seems it always comes back to balance 😉

Have a fantastic rest of the week Mark!

    • You so got that right about balance Dana!LOL!

It’s like when you hear about a company that’s literally doing
tens of millions of dollars in gross sales, but to date, they’ve yet
      to actually turn a profit!LOL!

Probably because, as if you pointed out, if expenses exceed revenues, even by the tiniest
of margins, you’re probably not going to be able to sustain yourself long term!

Like you, I’d love to would love to know what ultimately happened to
      that business you’re referring to?

Because as you mentioned, clearly the demand is there for health foods
and the related services! So clearly there must have been some other
      accompanying issues!

Thanks so much for stopping by and sharing your extremely valuable thoughts! They are always welcome and so
      greatly appreciated!
