So here’s a really quick question for you.
How come supposedly serious entrepreneurs, do practically everything within their power and control, to keep from running their business like a real business?Seriously!
They (initially) attempt to use (outrageously) restrictive, free blogging platforms, such as blogger or livejournal and or WordPress.com.
Not to be confused with the other (highly recommended) free WordPress.org platform.
But here’s an even bigger concern,they often balk at strategically using one of the (absolute) most powerful (free) assets in their entire marketing arsenal!
And what particular asset pray tell might that be? You so skeptically ask? Why it’s none other,, than mega proven, bank account filling power networking! Huh?
Let me give you a really quick, (but) concrete idea of what I’m referring to.My friend, whether you realize it or not, (right now) you’ve got insider access to,past customers, patients, under utilized business assets of all kinds.
And or clients, that could potentially lead you right to your long awaited pot of gold!Let’s take a closer look at an instance or two, shall we?
So If So Called Power Networking Is Potentially So Darn Profitable How Come So Many Entrepreneurs Resist Using It?
Honestly, my guess is, (deep down) they really don’t believe and or see, “how” they can profit, (in any form and or fashion), from their current assembled network and or any past attempts at power networking they may have already done!
And that’s really a shame. Case in point; in this very first, (hopefully) creative marketing mind expanding example.
Let’s take a look at how the major players power network, then we’ll gradually scale it back, to where the rest of us mere mortals, can hopefully use the exact same proven blueprint, only where we are currently!
And by (power networking), I’m merely referring to a highly sophisticated form of selective resource sharing.
So anyway, (entrepreneur) did you happen to hear about this particular power networking scenario, that was all over social media and the financial news feeds, a while back.
Networking Basics Don’t Automatically Have To Lead To Nickel And Dime Transactions!
Without naming these two major power brokers! One was recently engaged and wanted to get his (soon to be wife) some major heavyweight bling! 😎 Nothing news worthy there,correct?
And (rumor has it),he took his (wife to be) to a major jeweler in New York city. And she picked out this absolutely dazzling rock, that retailed for a cool two million dollars!(Hey a major power brokers wife has gotta look and feel good when she steps out on the town,right? 😎 )
Hey I told you he was a major player!Anyway, because this major power broker was (and is), a major star on a monster hit, (prime time) network TV show.
He ever so shrewdly bartered some free prime exposure for the jewelers business, (in this particular case), a cool two million dollars worth, in exchange for the jeweler giving the rock to his high profile, soon to be wife! 😎 Say what?
Entrepreneur, that’s some totally serious power networking! Would you not agree?
Who Couldn’t Take Advantage Of That Type Of Golden Power Networking Opportunity?
Think about “what” constantly happens everywhere this guy’s wife of the future goes!She’s got that outrageously noticeable sparkling two million dollar billboard on her finger!Right? 😉
Major magazines line up to interview her, just so they can show close ups of the rock,right? And whether she visiting with other major power brokers wife’s at (high profile) social and or fund raising events of all kinds!
Or if she’s entertaining guests at one of their three major mansions, or on their twenty six million dollar yacht!
The subject of that rock and where she got it, at some point is definitely gonna come up!Don’t you agree? 😎
So do you think the jeweler will end up receiving far more than two million dollars in powerful free, (positive) word of mouth & mouse publicity?You bet!
But okay, but you’re probably thinking, yea, so “how” does that (pretty far out) power networking example help me, with my single location, cash strapped, (local) women’s shoe store? So glad you asked!Seriously!Alright, fair enough!
You Don’t Really Have To Be A Major Power Broker In Order To Benefit From Power Networking Do You?(Not At All!)
Basically, (you and I) wanna get the exact same mega benefits from power networking,from our current level of business acumen, correct?
So here’s “how” you can go about systematically garnering some serious, long term, positive word of mouth & mouse publicity!
Even though (chances are), you’ll probably never ever get massive free prime time television exposure for your business, product and or service!(But hey, you truly never know!)
Here’s how you initially get the ball rolling.Instead of investing your entire $15,000 dollar (traditional) advertising/marketing budget on the usual (suspects), that being, dismally performing (local) radio, TV and newspaper ads etc.
Being An Entrepreneur Means Constantly Building Long Term Relationships!
You’re going to (initially) allocate $5,000 dollars of your ad/marketing budget and go find yourself, the following three local vendors, that have fairly good (to great) reputations.
You’ll need a local upscale women’s hair salon owner, an upscale women’s nail salon owner and a local connection to several nurses, at a few of the local hospitals.
You’ll offer (both) the hair & nail salon owners and all of the stylists in their shops, the opportunity to buy any one pair of shoes they like,at a substantial , “VIP new customer only” discount. (With absolutely no) minimum purchase requirement!
And as long as they bring a new potential first time customer, 18 & over with them to your store, they can buy a second pair at your actual cost too!
And if they join your opt in email (and or) text message list, you’ll automatically add them to your “VIP close out sale alert notice list”, where they receive a guaranteed 72 hours notice, before any “close out/final liquidation sale” items are offered to the general public!
Power Networking 101 Is A Must! (Don’t You Agree?)
Ladies & gentlemen, (hopefully) you can really see and are starting to appreciate the entire big picture here!
They will use their $5,000 dollar a month marketing allocation, to buy some high profile (positive word of mouth) exposure for their shoes!
(And do so, by allowing a select number of high profile local women to buy an extremely limited pair of your best looking shoes, at your actual cost.)
And these ladies (more like) a growing army of high profile, (outgoing) (local) women will gladly become walking, (constantly talking) positive word of mouth & mouse publicity generators!Don’t you agree?
Because think about it, they routinely meet and chit chat, before their shift starts,(practically every time they work together), and they constantly pal around at lunch and they constantly hangout together after work!Do they not?They party together big time!They spend the holidays together!
Various Types Of Power Networking Is Like An Ever Expanding Mushroom!
They attend each others weddings, surprise birthday & retirement parties, kids events and PTA meetings!
They sometimes vacation together and they’re constantly on the phone or texting each other!Look at all those potential interactions!Over & over!
So “what” do you think will happen when an army of them start showing up with those really snazzy new shoes?

Caution – rant ahead! When I worked in travel I LOVED networking. I’d be at a conference flitting around like miss butterfly connecting with as many people as possible and I prided myself in my l-o-n-g list of contacts all over the frigging world. That changed dramatically when I started working online because on line we have TRUST issues. I know you do a lot of great work aimed at local businesses Mark but I live on an Island in a state that has two main focuses – tourism and agriculture. Plus a significant percentage of my followers / sales are from Canada and Europe.
But back to the trust issue. For quite awhile I seriously tried to do the networking thing online but again and again I ran into people who could care less about getting to know each other – they just wanted to pitch me their “opportunity.” And then there are the guys who send the “you are so beautiful, I’d love to get to know you” messages. I totally confess, I’ve become so jaded that I no longer accept Facebook friend requests (especially from men) unless I know them from a group or mutual acquaintance. So the bottom line is my network is growing, but slowly and carefully and there is simply no way in hell I will even discuss business with someone until I get to know them. But then, that’s just me. 🙂

You really broke this process down. I think many resist networking. If I can speak from my own experience… I enjoy interacting with people, but I’m not a super, social butterfly. So when I started my business, the ‘networking’ was difficult (or a lot of it anyway).
But I know it is a big part and profitable but I struggle to do things that do not feel natural to me.
I’m glad you wrote such a post, because it’s helped me to see where I’m lacking!
