Why Sometimes Real Opportunity Is Disguised As Just Plain Old Crazy!

Remember the very last time you (either) watched a particularly good movie and or you read a really good spy type novel and or mystery novel.

And the ending absolutely “rocked” your socks completely off, because you so didn’t see that particular ending coming? Yea, you definitely know “what” I’m talking about, right?

Like for instance, for those of you that saw the Hollywood block buster feature film “The Usual Suspects” starring Kevin Spacey and a host of other highly recognizable stars. The very end of that movie came as quite a shock, did it not?

Well, equally as surprising, sometimes in (both) life in general and business in particular, (so called) real opportunity, can often initially be pleasantly disguised as just plain old crazy! 😎

That is, until you take a step or two back and really open your minds eye (wide) to the potential long term marketing (and or) problem solving possibilities.

Granted, while “what” you’re about to be exposed to in the remainder of this particular post, can’t even begin to compete with the dramatic and totally unexpected ending of “The Usual Suspects”, feature film.

It still just might serve you extremely well in the coming years entrepreneur! At least, that’s the overall intentions!

So What Exactly Separates The Line Between A So Called Real Opportunity And Just Plain Old Crazy?

Entrepreneur I hope you are up for a truly inspiring and incredibly graphic example of “how” some extremely savvy entrepreneurs, can often take (on the surface) “what” appears to most, to just be plain old crazy!

While others see it as the Bona fide opportunity it was meant to be! (I’ll let you be the ultimate judge!) Anyway, as this particular legendary marketing tale goes.

An extremely savvy marketing director (and staff), of a fairly popular radio station located in Kansas city Missouri, was struggling with trying to increase their revenue and market share.(Oh the joys of entrepreneurship! 😎 )

And they were busily testing and tweaking various conventional and non conventional marketing methods for doing so.And as fate would have it, the marketing director just so happened to attend a Saturday afternoon little league baseball game of one of his nephews, just to (A.) show support of his younger sister’s kids efforts!

And (B.) mostly clear his own head and cool out some what, before spending the remainder of the weekend trying to brainstorm some of the ideas mentioned during the final Friday afternoon meeting!

Well, just by chance, there was this incredibly-overly- enthusiastic (older) female fan there, frantically waving her rather large homemade sign and cheering on the same team the marketing director’s nephew played for! 😎

So obviously her cheer leading was more than welcome! However, (picture this) if you can. There may have been a grand total of thirty-rather reserved- adults sitting in the bleachers, on this particular summers day and (here’s) this one overly enthusiastic female fan, cheering and (periodically) holding up her big (homemade) neon like sign.

Well, it turns out, what really caught and thoroughly ignited the marketing directors attention and curiosity, was what was actually written on the  homemade sign! Not the fact that she had one and was a complete cheer leading fanatic! 😎

Real Opportunities And True Marketing Inspiration Can Often Come From The Strangest Places!

After the game concluded and as everyone was congratulating their kids and heading to the parking lot and or to the concession stands one last time, before heading home. 😎

As the marketing director got close enough to actually read the woman’s homemade sign, (get this) the sign was actually for some other little league team, that that one of her relatives kids had played for, that (apparently) had won the little league city title a few years ago, in a completely different state!Huh?

And she, (like) the marketing director was there merely supporting another one of her local relatives kids!Well of course, being totally perplexed, the marketing director, couldn’t resist asking, who she was and after a little initial small talk, he simply had to know “why” in the world, she had that particular sign? What possible relevance could it have?

(Entrepreneur, are you sitting down?) It tuns out, this particular lady was marketing savvy like a fox!

In reality she was a CPA (Certified Financial Planner), with a thriving and growing practice! 😎

And the sign was merely a highly orchestrated marketing ruse to get potential new first time clients to start up a conversation with her, rather than her merely bringing her business cards and or brochures and potentially scaring potential clients off! 😎

And she said, without fail, her sign always managed to generated enough curiosity to land a few first time clients and or referrals! 😎  This display of complete marketing brilliance, simply blew the marketing directors socks off!

Isn’t It Funny What Happens When Opportunity Meet The Right Mindset!

Here’s what that flash of  complete marketing brilliance, inspired this Kansas city radio station marketing director to do. Since Kansas City is the home of the NFL franchise, The Kansas City Chiefs.

And their nemesis has always been the (at the the time) Los Angeles Raiders (aka) Oakland Raiders. And the two teams played each other twice each season, once on the others home field.

This extremely savvy marketing director actually bought four tickets for his staff to actually fly out to Los Angeles to attend a Raiders, Chiefs game in Los Angeles.

And he decked them out in the chiefs flaming red jerseys and chief caps etc. But here’s the kicker! Their tickets placed them on opposite sides of the stadium in teams of two’s.

And each team had these really big neon signs (advertising) their Kansas city radio station!Huh?So here they are on a nationally televised NFL football game, being broadcast to literally millions of viewers nation wide.

And (at least) six or seven times, the camera people showcased this Kansas city radio station on national television!

Of course the (obvious) question begs asking, “what” possible good does it do some virtually unknown radio station located in Kansas city Missouri to be featured on a nationally televised football game?

When nobody, other than the residents in Kansas city, and the immediate local area could possibly tune in? Entrepreneur, “that’s” exactly why what this creative thinking marketing director and his staff did, worked so well!Huh?

The camera people must have been thinking the exact same thing, because even the broadcasters commented as much, upon the third or fourth time their signs got featured!

And you wanna know what happened the very next week, back in good old Kansas city? The radio station was inundated with requests, about hiring the marketing department, to direct the marketing/advertising campaigns of several local and regional companies!

Their rational was, if that virtually unknown- local- radio station, could figure out such  a creative way to relatively inexpensively generate, huge national attention from the nation media, the way they did!

Maybe they could help these local and regional companies do the same! And who could argue with their logic! 😎

And of course this creative marketing ploy landed them a ton of new and repeat business!Although I’m not sure if the marketing actually stuck around or not! 😎

But hopefully, you can see and appreciate “how” sometimes, real opportunity is often initially disguised as just plain old crazy!Don’t you agree?

  2. The radio station promo approach is creative and makes perfect sense to me because it’s the very same kind of thinking that had me and my fellow managers singing Hawaiian songs and danging hula in all kinds of off the wall places around the world, but I don’t know that I could ever pull off a stunt like the lady at the little league game. Still the important thing is sparked a nerve and ended up producing some impressive results. Thanks for the inspiration Mark!
